Our Patreon Auto-Generated Transcript The Boy With The Thorn In His Side SUMMARY KEYWORDS hannah, santa cruz, monarch butterflies, smiths, butterflies, morrissey, charmed, vegan, trees, cold, crush, coincidence, beach, loved, lovely, parking lot, leaves, t shirt, deschanel, tutu SPEAKERS Christopher Garcia   Christopher Garcia  Track seven, the boy with a thorn in his side, three minutes 18 seconds.   Christopher Garcia  Coincidence is something I've almost built my life around. I've had moments where he said a word like Charmed, and then suddenly a TV turns on and charmed is on it, it happens. Or I'll run into someone I haven't seen in years and we'll start a conversation where we both found out that we were both doing the same thing in the same place at exactly the same time. It's a coincidence that often pop up that keeps me and the Smiths connected, whether it is a fare in the 90s a 711 parking lot today, or in the case of the boy with the thorn in his side, a date for a walk along the water in Santa Cruz.   Christopher Garcia  Natural bridges is one of the most beautiful places within an hour of my hometown of Santa Clara. It's on the water third tide pools, a lovely beach, a rock formation that is fun to swim out to. And millions and millions of Monarch butterflies. I tried to go every year to see them gathered. It's a ritual and it's beautiful. Now, I don't know what a lot of granola mantra is back in the day. That's not true. They were folks who love nature just flat out loved it. Morrissey might have fully appreciated that.   Christopher Garcia   And I had a massive crush on Hannah. She was tall. She was hilarious. She was smarter than any other human I knew. Mas would also have loved her she was a vegan paetynn in good standing though she had no problem enjoying a gluten soy tofu corn based meal, while her companion was chomping on a burger. That was the promise of the after beach. A trip to my favorite restaurant in Santa Cruz. The O'mei.   Christopher Garcia  I met her there. She lived in Santa Cruz and I was driving in from Silicon Valley. When I got there, it was exactly the kind of day I expect from Santa Cruz. Prior to noon. It was overcast and cold. Not the type of cold you get in the Midwest shop. It was San Francisco in middle July cold, really cold. She was wearing hand to God, a Smith t shirt, the cover of rank and tiny black jean shorts. She didn't look cold at all probably accustomed to the temperature of the frigid tundra of Santa Cruz. I was wearing a t shirt and a Hawaiian shirt over it. And I was freezing. A baby. She said walking over to give me a kiss on the cheek and a crushing hug. That was her thing. How you doing? I said, Great. You got to see these flutter buys. They're everywhere. She had the sort of wide eyed wonder that we might associate with Zoey Deschanel today. She dragged me by my arm towards the trees, which I could already tell were the color of Boston and October, only not the trees. The monarch butterflies. She pulled me up to one of them a huge eucalyptus with loomed a bit down the path from the parking lot. She got us right up next to them. I stared up. Look at how they blow in the wind. She was straight up her mouth gaping and wonder. They're like living leaves. I was far more into wonder if I was far more interested in the wonder of her being in such wander than I was in the Wonder itself. They're scared of us. You know? I said, What do you think that? Because they can see that you're a vegan? And they look like leaves. You're liable to eat them? No, they know I would never eat them. They're smart. Smart enough to see that look in your eyes. Hannah. You're gonna much much much. Could they look into my eyes? And still they don't believe me. She said how can they hear me say those words and still they don't believe me. I responded that she started singing the entire song. The girl had that kind of voice. The voice that I hated nuance lovely and most of all loud. In other words, it was perfect and achievable by common human beings. She could even dance like Morrissey when she did in which she did in that grove of trees covered in butterflies. It was pretty amazing. And she wasn't shy either. She spun she threw her arms up. She may have scared on all the families. Though a couple of little kids started dancing with her. It was one of those scenes that only happened in movies or to people who try and live their lives like they're in movies. I have been accused of such myself, you know? And then something strange happened. Well, yes, all of it was a bit strange but a bird a fairly large one swung down, then swapped upwards plowing through a pile of butterflies. A couple of them seemed cotton, its beak when went down to the ground jumping on.   Christopher Garcia  One of the little girls screamed and the bird did a little jump forward frightened and then jumped up. Been dove back into the butterflies taking down another few, several ...
