(1) Today’s Rambam states: “One who plants a tree near the Mizbeach…even if he did so to decorate the Mikdash and to beautify it, he is punished by lashes, as the verse states, ‘Do not plant for yourself an asheira or any tree near the Mizbeach of Hashem your G-d.’ Because this was the practice of idolaters…” The lesson is as follows: When the yetzer comes and claims that there is a certain idea that could bring decoration and beauty to Yiddishkeit, and attract those who have strayed etc. (and although it is done by non-Jews, it argues that “The Merciful One desires the heart” etc.), the response is: First and foremost, you must see whether this practice accords with Hashem’s will, and if it does not, it is forbidden to do it. What leads to true beauty is the path Yiddishkeit in accordance with Hashem’s will. (2) Every Jew is entitled to the greatest reward for his fulfillment of Torah and mitzvos. As it says Torah Or, “We find that Nevuchadnetzar, because he took three steps in honor of the Holy One, blessed be He, was granted kingship over the entire world for him and his descendants after him…There is no Jew who has not honored Hashem in this way, and one deserves all the good of this world.”

גם קודם עשיית המשכן הגשמי למטה היו קיימים כל עניני המשכן ברוחניות (כמ"ש בפ' תרומה "וראה ועשה בתבניתם אשר אתה מראה בהר"), ומ"מ נצטוו בני ישראל [בתחילת פ' תרומה] לקחת י"ג (ט"ו) דברים גשמיים דוקא "זהב וכסף ונחושת וגו'" (דברים אלו נלקחו מביזת מצרים!), ולבנות משכן בעוה"ז הגשמי דוקא, ודוקא עי"ז נפעל הענין ד"ושכנתי בתוכם" - המשכת עצמות ומהות למטה! וזהו גם הענין ד"המעשה הוא העיקר", שמבלי הבט על גודל העילוי שבכוונת המצוות וכו' נדרשת מיהודי העבודה דקיום המצוות במעשה בפועל! וכמו שאת המשכן עשו מכל סוגי דברים, מ"זהב" עד ל"נחושת" כו', עד"ז יש לעשות את הדירה לו ית' בכל חלקי הבריאה, וכן את ה"משכן" הפרטי שבכל אחד בכל עניניו וכחותיו.

Even before the physical Mishkan was built, all aspects of the Mishkan existed in spiritual form (as the verse states in parashas Terumah: “See and make in their form, as you are shown on the mountain”). Nevertheless, the Jewish people were commanded (at the beginning of the parashah) to specifically take thirteen (or fifteen) physical items, “gold, silver, and copper…” (which were taken from the spoils of Egypt) and to build with them a Mishkan specifically in this physical world. It is precisely in this way that Hashem “dwells among them,” meaning his Essence and Being are manifest down here. This also expresses the fact that “Action is the main thing”: however great and lofty one’s intentions in mitzvos might be, ultimately a Jew is required to actually do the mitzvos. And just as the Mishkan was made from all kinds of materials, from “gold” to “copper,” etc., so too the dwelling place for Hashem must be made with all aspects of creation. Likewise, the personal Mishkan within every Jew must be built from all of his faculties and every aspect of his life.

1. הכח שאצל כל א', אפי' פשוט שבפשוטים, יתקבלו ה"משפטים" בשכלו כמו אצל הגדול שבגדולים (כפי שתורת אמת דורשת) – מבאר הפסוק בעצמו: "אשר תשים לפניהם", שקאי על משה רבינו, רעי' מהימנא. בכחו של משה יכול כל מחנך טוב שמתמסר לחינוך להצליח ולגלות את ה"עם חכם ונבון" שבכל יהודי, ובמילא יתקבלו ה"משפטים" בפנימיותו – "לפניהם". 2 . "מצוה גוררת מצוה" הוא גם במי שנמצא במקום החושך! המצוה הוא "נר מצוה" שמאיר עד שמושך עוד מצוה, ועאכו"כ אם הוא בגדר "תינוק שנשבה בין העכו"ם". לאחרונה ישנם הרוצים להוסיף קטעים חדשים בסידור התפילה (הלואי שיעשו משהו שיקיימו מצות תפלה כמו עד עתה...) ושגם נשים יהיו "רבנים"... ועד שלדעתם מי שחושב אחרת אינו ב"צורת-אדם" כי הרי אינו מתחשב בנשים ובנות... שכ"ז הוא מרידה ב"דבר הוי' זו הלכה", ואין כאן המקום להאריך בדבר המצער.

(1) Even the simplest Jew has the ability to receive the “Mishpatim” intellectually just like the greatest (as the Torah of truth demands), as the verse states, “…that you must set before them (lifneihem),” which is addressed to Moshe Rabbeinu, the Faithful Shepherd. With the power of Moshe, any good educator who devotes himself to it can succeed in revealing the “wise and understanding people” within every Jew, and thus the “Mishpatim” will be ingrained in every Jew’s inner self (“lipnimiyusam”). (2) The fact that “One mitzvah leads to another mitzvah” applies even to a Jew who finds himself in a place of darkness, because a mitzvah is a lamp that illuminates for him until it leads to another mitzvah – and certainly this is true for a Jew who is a “child taken captive among the nations.” Lately there are those who wish to add new passages to the siddur and who believe that women should become “rabbis” etc., to the point that in their view no respectable person can think otherwise etc. All of this constitutes a rebellion against “the word of Hashem, which is halacha” (and this is not the place to elaborate on such a painful topic).
