Upon their return, the Guru cooks the bitter gourd, and the disciples are surprised to find it is still incredibly bitter!

The Guru gently explains that just as the holy river cannot wash away the innate bitterness of the vegetable, mere rituals and sacred baths cannot wash away our sins.
