Bag Man

By: MSNBC Rachel Maddow
  • Summary

  • Is it possible for an American Vice President to carry out a criminal enterprise inside the White House and have nobody remember? To have one of the most brazen political bribery scandals in American history play out before the country while nobody’s paying attention? In her first original podcast, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow goes back 45 years to dig into a story that got overshadowed in its day. There’s intrigue. Corruption. Envelopes of cash delivered to the White House. It’s a story that’s not well known, but it probably should be. Especially today. Bag Man. A Rachel Maddow podcast from MSNBC. He was brash. Politically incorrect. An “outsider” political candidate who rose to the White House, out of nowhere, with a reputation as a “counter-puncher.” But Vice President Spiro Agnew was also something else… an active criminal whose secrets were about to be exposed. What happens when a “counter-puncher” in the White House suddenly sees his political future directly threatened by investigators inside his own Justice Department?

Great telling of an little understood episode that impacts current events

Well researched, compellingly told and informative. I lived when news of these crimes was revealed. Listen to this series, I’ve learned so much more. And now I see the direct impact on current US politics.

Listen for Free on a Podcast app - skip Audible

Skip this on Audible…This review is mostly for those asking about a better version- this podcast originally came out it October 2018 and is available on most any Podcast App - no subscriptions needed and there are NO ADS etc when you listen via a podcast app (I personally use my iPhone Podcast app).

I’m not even a history buff, and this podcast drew me in from the very beginning. This was actually the very first podcast I ever listened to. There is also a newish (2020) book out, and expands on the podcast, but unfortunately it it doesn’t seem to be available via any type of audio. Even tho there is the expanded book, the podcast was very thorough and engrossing. I highly recommend anyone to listen, no matter what side of the aisle you prefer. Rachel does a bang up job.

Maddow is a brilliant story teller

I really enjoyed this . I was only 8 years old when this happened so I didn’t know a lot of the details until now . Rachel Maddie is so great at setting up a compelling story and putting everything in layman‘s terms. It’s a great listen. Although the ads are annoying , I pay for the service and the same thing happens with SiriusXM I pay for that and it’s supposed to be commercial free and has commercials all over the place. Seriously reconsidering these memberships if they’re going to double dip with advertising and subscriber fees.

Careful Excellent Journalism

I was delighted by the careful fact based presentation of the Agnew saga. Ms. Maddow did a very good job narrating the material and she resisted the temptation to make snide quips which would have, somewhat diminished the overall impact of the reporting. I am looking forward to more work like this from Ms. Maddow and her collaborators

We all know about Nixon, but what about Agnew?

I love the podcast version of this book! Told in classic Rachel Maddow style and narrated by her, we learn the story of the man pissibly more corrupt than Richard Nixon. If Nixon was impeached, could the county withstand Agnew's impeachment as well? Fascinating piece of history that I knew nothing about because Watergate was sucking all the oxygen out of the room!

I watched almost every moment of Watergate

I didn’t think I could learn much more. This was a delightful surprise. Interesting and riveting. Well worth the listen.
