Set against the harsh beauty of the Scottish Hebrides, this story is soaked in longing, silence, repression, and the terrible weight of inherited masculinity. Stuart writes fathers and sons better than almost anyone alive, and the relationship at the center of this novel absolutely wrecked me. Every conversation feels loaded with generations of things left unsaid. Every act of tenderness feels dangerous.
What I admire most about Stuart is that he never reduces his characters to symbols or moral lessons. Even at their most frustrating, they remain painfully human. There is so much loneliness in this book, but also so much aching desire to be understood, loved, and finally seen. The emotional tension underneath these pages is almost unbearable at times.
And the writing itself is just gorgeous. Douglas Stuart writes with this lyrical, sensory richness that makes every setting feel alive. The wind, the sea, the weaving traditions, the religious rigidity, the isolation of island life, all of it becomes part of the emotional landscape of the novel.
This may honestly be Stuart’s most emotionally mature work yet. It carries the heartbreak of Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo, but there is something quieter and deeper happening underneath it. A profound meditation on shame, identity, love, and the impossible distance that can exist between the people who belong to each other most.
Douglas Stuart is quickly becoming one of those rare authors where I will read absolutely anything he writes.
