I read about a third of this book and loved it. I thought the narrator a gentle soul who was very intelligent and clearly in love with the intriguing Viola. They shared a fascination with the world around them. The reader did not communicate this at all, only communicating Mimo’s harsh responses to the difficulties of his life. Mimo was an artist who saw beauty around him as well as the brutality. The reader totally ruined the story for me. I would not have kept listening if i had not been under time constraints that forced me to listen to the book while traveling.
I really enjoyed the story overall!

I enjoyed the story and its historical and artistic plot. Interestingly set between world wars, a period not as often used as a setting for historical fiction these days. What made me cringe while listening is the narrator’s inability to pronounce Italian. A strange choice of talent since the book is set in Italy. Where is the production’s editor? Or an Italian speaking dialect coach? Seems like a simple fix: practice pronouncing the vocabulary before starting the recording.

le prix Goncourt for a reason. This story is magnificent, touching and, like sculpture, removes everything that is not a part of the story that concerns everyone.
