From master storyteller Ania Ahlborn comes a brand-new psychological thriller described as “a horrifying manifesto of marriage, manipulation, and the unpredictability of human relationships.”

Simone and Elliott Evans have it all; a comfortable life, a house on a quiet street, and two sweet daughters. But their marriage is far from happy, especially now. While Elliott spends all day at work, postpartum depression presses down hard on Simone’s shoulders. Baby Lizzy is colicky and often sick. Five-year-old Aster is a handful—not at all as good a “helper” as Simone had hoped. The more time Simone spends home alone with the girls, the more she’s convinced that Elliott’s interest in his family is waning. He’s pining for his ex, Leighton Prescott—a woman who mysteriously disappeared from their small New Hampshire town years before, leaving her and Elliott’s then newborn daughter, Aster, behind.

When Simone confronts Elliott in search of the truth, he reminds her that this isn’t the first time she’s accused him of being unfaithful, and it isn’t the first time her assumption has been wrong. But when Simone spots Leighton at the grocery store in their tiny hometown, she has her proof. Leighton Prescott is back, and despite what Elliott says, Simone knows Leighton will stop at nothing to destroy the life she’s built with Elliott, piece by precious piece.

Terrified of losing her family, Simone puts Elliott to the ultimate test. He’s left with one last chance to save the marriage he vowed to preserve. But rather than rekindling the love he and Simone once shared, he instead uncovers an unfathomable truth about the woman he calls his wife, a woman that, as it turns out, he doesn’t know at all.

What an interesting read. Really worth the listen, hold on until the end! Overall, satisfying at the end but ran a little long in the beginning.

Slow Burn… Worth the Wait

I really enjoyed this from start to finish. Usually I am a happy ending kind of gal, but this was a nice finish. 10/10

Couldn't stop listening!

I love Ania’s books. This is a good one. It will pull you in right away and not let go until it’s over. My one and only complaint is the abrupt ending. But that’s just because it was so good, I wanted more. A small vent session about a few aspects of the story (maybe don’t read if you don’t want even a sliver of a spoiler) I have never read/listened to a story where I wanted the MC to crash and burn, lose, or get what they deserved as much as I did with Simone. At first, I thought it was just postpartum depression making her as irrational as she is, but eventually you come to realize that she’s a true psychopath and the postpartum depression only enhances her mood swings, paranoia and absolute insanity. The whole time you’re listening, you just want to tell the MC’s (Simone and Elliot) to just fucking COMMUNICATE. The entire shit show could have been avoided with open communication. But let’s be real, a lot of relationships suffer due to a lack of communication, and this story really showcases how things can spiral into unfixable territory without healthy communication. Eventually I understood that there is no such thing as communicating with Simone. Whatever her paranoia conjures up inside her mind is reality, and there is no changing her mind or getting through to her. She’s a terrifying kind of person. Hell bent on getting what she wants, no matter what. Selfish and deranged to the core. And for the vast majority of the story, I hated her lol

However, I did find myself sympathizing with her on occasion. The narrator does a great job at making Aster sound as annoying as possible. I felt annoyed for Simone and I understood why she was so frustrated. I will say that I’m surprised she never hurt the girls physically. She’s deranged and psychotic, but she does have heart, even though it’s twisted, bent and broken.

This story also highlights the very real concept of generational trauma. Simone desperately searches for a man just like her dad, someone safe and secure. But she inherited her mothers mental health issues, and she does to Elliot and the girls what her mother did to her and her dad. And so the cycle continues.

What a twisted and wild ride

This seemed very long and drawn out but still very well written. I enjoyed the back story. Kind of unrealistic. The main character is unhinged, but I’m here for it

Slow burn

Unfortunately this was pretty predictable, and not at all scary or frightening. Interesting characters though.

Just OK.

I love Ania Ahlborn! This is another winner. Crazy and dark, kept me hooked! While some was predictable, there were some great twists.

Love her

The story here is an unreliable narrator that you can tell very quickly and the story doesn't really give a whole lot. It's not the best story from this author at all.

This was painful. It was not a good story. I expect more out of this author.
