Critic reviews

"Julia Whelan reads the novel in her low, pleasant voice, moving down a register to capture Richard's infuriating condescension and lightening slightly for the younger Emma. With its perfidious turns, this escapist entertainment is a fine example of the 21st century's more cynical version of the O. Henry ending." (The Washington Post)

"Readers who were enthralled by B.A. Paris's Behind Closed Doors and Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl will love the skewed psychology and shifting perspectives in this domestic thriller." (Library Journal)

"A fiendishly clever romantic thriller in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. This one will keep you guessing." (Anita Shreve, New York Times best-selling author of The Stars Are Fire)

I loved this book.... I listen to 2-3 books per week and can honestly say this is the first since Gone Girl to shock me...so much so that I needed to rewind to be sure I'd heard correctly. Don't want to go on for fear of spoilers.... worth 10 credits.... get this book!

FINALLY a book that really is as good as Gone Girl

I was expecting more twist and turns. I found it pretty predictable. It was enjoyable but not memorable.

meh

I absolutely loved this book! I was worried about the reviews saying it was confusing but it really wasn’t, you just really have to pay attention. It was full of twists and surprises and was overall a great listen!

Amazing

Every single time a review says "If you liked Gone Girl, you'll love this!" I end up disappointed. This time is no different. This book was just meh. It dragged on and on, repeating scenes unnecessarily. The unreliable narrator has been done WAY better and was included here for "shock" value that was underwhelming.

It felt formulaic, and I never connected with the narrator. She tolerated her non-life-threatening marriage way longer than she should have. A quick divorce would have worked better. And her husband just wasn't that scary or threatening.

If this was a first effort for these two authors, there's hope that they'll improve.

I wanted to like this one...

I’m shocked that this book received such rave reviews! At one point I even wondered aloud “am I listening to the same book?” I found this to be confusing until the second half. The narrator really was disappointing. I’ve like her in other books but she struggled with this one. It was just over all incredibly boring.

I found it "twisty" merely to be twisty. The surprise plot twist was a bit lame. The characterization was sacrificed to this desire for a Gone Girl plot. It ended up being a bit of an ordeal to stick with it.

Contrived and overwritten.

confusing a lot of times and hard to follow at certain times. a lot of useless information in the book that adds no value to the overall story. it was paiful to read at several points in time.

Could not put the air pods down. Very good book, excellent character development. YET - one drawback - if you have read Freida McFaddens's book - The Housemaid - , you will want to know who copied from whom? Striking similarities and basic story line. Performance is great - would recommend, despite the book having been somewhat written already.
I would give a A-. If you like my review, please like.
Thank you.

YUP, believe the reviews and the hype

this is a very bizarre tale made even more difficult by horrible narration. The narrator often went from character to character in the same voice and when trying to sound like a male voice it was just ridiculous and silly and made it really hard to like this book. I can't say I wasted a credit , I did finish, but I would not recommend this book especially with this narrator. I will never understand why so much effort is put into a book only to have the complete story lost by terrible narration. Overall a bizarre story horrible narration pass this one up

Very bizarre!

A very interesting plot but could have been shorter. Authors tried too hard to introduce “twists and turns” and, as a result, became too confusing and overshadowed the plot.

Verbose
