Working at the local processing plant, Marcos is in the business of slaughtering humans - though no one calls them that anymore.

His wife has left him, his father is sinking into dementia, and Marcos tries not to think too hard about how he makes a living. After all, it happened so quickly. First, it was reported that an infectious virus has made all animal meat poisonous to humans. Then governments initiated the "Transition". Now, eating human meat - "special meat" - is legal. Marcos tries to stick to numbers, consignments, processing.

Then one day he's given a gift: a live specimen of the finest quality. Though he's aware that any form of personal contact is forbidden on pain of death, little by little he starts to treat her like a human being. And soon, he becomes tortured by what has been lost - and what might still be saved.

this was recommended to me from my cousin. I wanted a quick read while on vacation. I'll admit it started off a bit slow, but afterwards, you become so involved in what is going on.

at first I wasn't sure I could get used to the narrators accents.. but OMG I LOVEE HIM! his voice really brought the story together and there couldn't have been a better narrator. amazing story line as week, and quiet creepy just my kind of book!

The voice actor does a wonderful job giving life and presence to the character. The author creates a great view into an alternate reality where meat has a name and morals have completely been rewritten. It's a fun, dark premise with delightful inner dilemma.

The story is well written and it gives a lot of details to visualize. I could see this being adapted into film

The way this book was written so simple yet so illustrative. The author really took care to ensure every single word matters, with absolutely no fluff. Every character feels well-constructed, 3 dimensional and real. The story is moving and a scathing commentary on society today.
