Publisher's Summary

Being the hero of a zombie apocalypse ain’t easy. People expect you to defeat lunatics, save survivors, and recover treasure when you would rather just make time with your girl. Mo Collins can’t avoid his scripted destiny; his personal oracle, Smokes, won’t let him. He can still bitch about it, though.

The crew of the replica pirate ship, the Viva Ancora, is growing, and the characters of this cast are fulfilling their roles toward destiny. As the group swells, the need to clear the town of the infected and secure Guntersville Island becomes paramount. Isolation from the world will protect them from the naked, blue, undead cannibals - or will it?

Something’s not right with these “zombies”; the script is verging into the unwritten. The more contact the team has with their predatory enemies, the less certain they are of their actions. Are they wiping out a plague...or murdering a new order?

Follow Mo and his crew as they try to skew fate and carve out their own society on an Alabama lake where the fish bite, the Zombies bite...and sometimes life bites. Welcome ashore, friend, to Zombie Island!

Hey Mo, is that a burning bridge I smell?

Mo and the gang are finally making some headway. They have their island home, and are systematically burning or explodifying everything that connects them to dry land. The crew is back, although I have to say yhat I wonder about Smokes, because there seems to be more him than we are being let in on. We'll just have to see about him. Anyway, the gang finds themselves in the typical troubles of trying to survive a zompocalypse. They look for other survivors, hunt for supplies, an deal with crazy people and the dead, what could be more fun?

Bonds knows how to pen a story that is both funny and full of emotion, and while it may come off as a silly book set in the desolation of a dying world there are moments that will really impact you. He is that good with his characters. The plot is solid, and it contains a good balance of humor, action, drama, and zombies. This ain't the Walking Dead where zombies only show up once a show, or only appear when the story calls for it. You always know what the gang is facing, and you know that at some point we are going to lose some people.

Salzman revs up his narration engine and keeps the fun alive. I think he instinctively knows how to add some funny into a scene, or how to play it for laughs where other narrators would utterly fail. He provides some great voices, and is crisp and clean in his narration. I never noticed a problem with the audio/sound or his story telling. He hits every zombie in the head until it is a bloody mess. He is really fun to listen to, and I doubt another narrator could pull off such a balancing act as well as he does here.

Bonds keeps the story and the characters going, and makes you think that if there was ever a zombie apocalyse then this would be the gang you'd want to hang out with as you tried to survive. I, for one, will keep coming back to this series quite happily, and I have no doubt that you will too. Give this book a try if you like humor, apocalypses, or zombies. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. Getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

So much fun.

Honestly unless your dead (or undead) inside, I don't think you can help but smile while listening to this audiobook. Zombie Island is the second book in the Still Alive series by Javan Bonds, a crazy meta satire of the zombie genre. Mr. Bonds has taken the well worn tropes of the genre and embraced them to the nth degree. In fact he openly mocks the genre, in such a delightful way. The zombies, which honestly aren't nearly as plentiful as you'd expect, are not your typical zombies. The infected turn blue, strip off their clothes, and tend to poop often and everywhere, For some strange reason they can often be found hiding in wait in restrooms. And while they are dangerous, no one ever seems all that terrified of them. The cast of characters --for that's really what they are a cast (often times the characters are not called by their names but rather the role they've been cast as: the hero, the oracle, etc) and they are characters, as in wacky individuals--are made up major stereotypes (intentionally and lovingly). The story itself is almost not important. Sure there are goals and whatnot (not going to go into any story spoilers), but it's also about the crazy day to day happenings of our main character, as much as his working to improve his community as it is about his pathetic attempt to get up the courage to have a love life.

The book is performed by S.W. Salzman. And I say performed rather than narrated because it really is more of a performance. As I mentioned many of these characters are stereotyped, intentionally, and Salzman embraces that, giving us over the top voices that perfectly match each stereotype. Now I suppose if you have no sense of humor, are uptight, and don't get that all of this stuff is done intentionally, then you might be offended. But then again if you are an uptight person with no sense of humor I doubt you'd have ever picked up this book. But as I said, Salzman does a great job. As much fun as reading this book might be, Salzman's voices and his delivery totally enhance the experience.

I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Blue Peevies!

First let me say that I am a late comer to the zombie apocalypse mania so prevalent today. So, when I read the first book in this series, I was surprised to be instantly hooked and begging for Mo!

Our reluctant hero, Mo Collins, continues as the narrator for most of this book in the form of journal entries. In addition, other chapters of the book are told from the third person perspective. I actually liked this way of writing since it broke up the book in a good way.

Mo and his crew, including the Expert, the Tech, his parents, the Love Interest, the Medicine Man, the Old Friend and the Oracle (Smokes!) have decided to make their compound a true island by blowing up all bridges that connect it to the mainland. With the addition of a construction worker named Danny Daniels (I know a guy with that name BTW), they accomplish this and add a drawbridge in order to have a way to go back on the mainland without a boat.

This book continues the fun that began in Book One and adds in lots of action, some tears, and loads of peevies. I love the way that the author, Javan Bonds, has incorporated so many references to pop culture. The Tech, Gene, who is a true geek, is great fun and I need to reread the book in order to catch all of the sci-fi movie and TV references.

Mo is definitely a reluctant hero, but the Oracle assures him at every turn that he will survive and his true place is at the helm of heroism. As Smokes says, "You was always at the place you was always posed to be".

Mr. Bonds' zombies are unique in that they are naked, blue and have a bowel control problem. These facts make for many hilarious scenes in the book when these infected people are encountered. I laughed so much at times that I was literally crying! But, there is plenty of blood, gore, exploding heads, etc. for those who like that sort of thing.

Be warned: this book is not politically correct and if you are easily offended, just keep walking. Mr. Bonds is fair in his uncorrectness, though. Every race, gender, sexual orientation and handicap are equally degraded and I love that he has done this. But, in my opinion, if you love reading about zombies, political correctness and lack of cursing is probably not a big deal for you!

Once again, S.W. Salzman adds so much to this book with his narration! His voices for the different characters are wonderful and his rendition adds a lot of humor that I don't think I would have noticed with another narrator. Mo's southern hillbilly accent is just perfect and Smokes.....I can't say enough about his voice! I truly have a picture in my mind of these characters and Mr. Salzman's voice has a lot to do with that. I hope that this pair continue in their collaboration for a long time!

I can't wait to continue this series and I know that I will continue reading these books as long as Mr. Bonds continues writing them. I threatened Mr. Bonds until he let me have a copy of this audiobook and I am glad that he gave in to these threats. This in no way influences my opinion of the writing or the narration.

What a fun apocalypse.... hahahaha

Well if it has to happen, this would be a fun place to be. As long as you can hook up with the crew of the pirate ship! Thank goodness I have books 2 and 3!

made me laugh out loud

Book 2 in this series was as enjoyable as book 1. I definitely want to hear the rest. The main character isn't super hero-like but relatable. The characters are interesting, and there's enough excitement to keep me reading

it's a zombie comedy

Javan Bonds Still Alive books are comedy. If you can't laugh at the exaggerated characters then you don't have a funny bone.
S.W. Salzman is amazing. I don't know how he manages to create so many different voices.

Zombie Island

Mo and the crew are back, and so are the peevies (the weird zombie like creatures that are around now, did I tell you they are naked and blue?). So the only way to be really safe is to make their home, Guntersville, into true island and than make sure it is clear of all peevies. So that is what our rag tag group of true Alabamans do, with what you ask, well explosives of course, the Tech and Expert can handle that stuff. But what else does the story writer have in store for them?

This is not only a great book/audio (I had the audio) it is hilarious! I wonder at times how narrator S W Salzman read the lines without loosing it, because I was laughing so hard in my car. Mo is a true and true southern boy who just wants to live through this time in his life and hopefully see his would rebuilt, or at least not die shooting poop everywhere, and I think Mr. Salzman captured all of the characters awesomely with his wonderful narration.

Really enjoying it so far

Finally got my ears around book two! Enjoying it thoroughly. The narrator gives a solid performance again and the story is a good listen - it doesn't take itself too seriously, but not at the cost of the quality. When a story has the line: "insane naked cannibals" in it, how can you go wrong? I put it on each night as I listen to books as I go to sleep - except this is a problem as I will be drifting off when something comes along that makes me chuckle and Im awake again. Though I think even the Mrs has had a laugh at it too :D Great stuff :)

Mo & friends ride again!

The apocalypse is still as unpredictable and fun as ever, but there are still so many questions: Where are the zombie bodies disappearing to and why? What will it take for Mo to kiss Sarah? Who does the Oracle have on speed dial, and what was he before May day? Answers on a post card or keep reading! And somebody pass me the next book - now!

My guilty pleasure!

Having listened to the first book in this series, I felt my only option was to listen to book 2. The story is filled with dark humour and SW Salzman really brings it to life with his eclectic range of Southern accents.
