Publisher's summary

Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable.

After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

But for farm entrepreneurs, the opportunities for a farm family business have never been greater. The aging farm population is creating cavernous niches begging to be filled by creative visionaries who will go in dynamic new directions. As the industrial agriculture complex crumbles and our culture clambers for clean food, the countryside beckons anew with profitable farming opportunities.

While this audiobook can be helpful to all farmers, it targets the wannabes, the folks who actually entertain notions of living, loving and learning on a piece of land. Anyone willing to dance with such a dream should be able to assess its assets and liabilities; its fantasies and realities. "Is it really possible for me?" is the burning question this audiobook addresses.

You Can Farm is wonderfully narrated by the author, Joel Salatin, who co-owns (with his family) Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia.

Has relevant in 2021 then 1998

I think a few concept could be updated since the internet has changed marketing so much. But the main idea is probably more relevant today then 20 years ago. I think this book is highly inspirational and has great concepts that can be further explored. It is a general book that is meant for people without a farming background.

Great on so many levels!

This is such a great book! So much wisdom for farmers and those who want to be one. Also, the chapter on Communication is a must read (hear) for anyone, not just farmers.

Pretty good

I found about 50% of this book very helpful. The author has some really good information on value adding, marketing, and overall farming advice. The other 50% unfortunately is his opinions and him repeating himself on opinions he’s already stated. Overall, 4/5.

A recommended read for hobby farmers

As a hobby farmer myself this was a great book full of useful advice and it is essential reading for anyone wanting to make a living out of a small farm and I totally agreed with 90% of the advice but there were a few parts where Salatin is a bit preachy and the religious aspects of the believe system did not sit entirely well with me. However, this gave me a great perspective and a good system for analysing my own farm ventures although I have the privelage of not being required to make a living off my acreage so I can afford to break a few of Salatin's extremely sensible views. It was thought provokign and my wife and I did a few bit of anlaysis of our own approach based on advised contained here.

Great book for inspiration and information!

This is the second Salatin book that I've listened to and enjoyed. This book is similar to Your Successful Farm Business, but there is enough difference to justify listening to both. Time for me to download a third Salatin book.
