A couple working six months per year for 50 hours per week on 20 acres can net $25,000 to $30,000 per year with an investment equivalent to the price of one new medium-sized tractor. Seldom has agriculture held out such a plum. In a day when mainline farm experts predict the continued demise of the family farm, the pastured poultry opportunity shines like a beacon in the night, guiding the way to a brighter future.

The restoration agriculture system described in this award-winning book works! It is possible for humans to produce staple foods using perennial agricultural ecosystems that actually improve the quality of the environment. This can be done on a backyard, farm, or ranch scale and is needed right now - on a global scale. Restoration Agriculture explains how we can have all of the benefits of natural, perennial ecosystems and create agricultural systems that imitate nature in form and function while still providing for our food, building, fuel, and many other needs.

Fossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem; it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels.

Story
Since its publication in 1977, The Unsettling of America has been recognized as a classic of American letters. In it, Wendell Berry argues that good farming is a cultural and spiritual discipline. Today’s agribusiness, however, takes farming out of its cultural context and away from families. As a result, we as a nation are more estranged from the land - from the intimate knowledge, love, and care of it.

Publisher's Summary
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable.
After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.
But for farm entrepreneurs, the opportunities for a farm family business have never been greater. The aging farm population is creating cavernous niches begging to be filled by creative visionaries who will go in dynamic new directions. As the industrial agriculture complex crumbles and our culture clambers for clean food, the countryside beckons anew with profitable farming opportunities.
While this audiobook can be helpful to all farmers, it targets the wannabes, the folks who actually entertain notions of living, loving and learning on a piece of land. Anyone willing to dance with such a dream should be able to assess its assets and liabilities; its fantasies and realities. "Is it really possible for me?" is the burning question this audiobook addresses.
You Can Farm is wonderfully narrated by the author, Joel Salatin, who co-owns (with his family) Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia.

Joel’s classic, finally on Audible!
The words contained in this book are timeless. It’s crazy to me to think this book was written over twenty years ago and everything still applies. In fact, we can see the changes that were brought forth from Joel, this book, and others like him. If you intend to farm, listen to this book with intention, writing it down, and taking it to heart. It will bring you far.
Polyface, PLEASE bring the rest of your wonderful books to audio, so those of us working in the garden, or pulling the tractors can listen while we work! Thank you!!

great book. made me angry.
Joe has some great business stuff in this book, even though it's not a book about business. great cultural commentary and other good philosophy stuff.
the title of the book is a little misleading though. I'm sitting here listening to Joel salatin talk about raising 500 turkeys and adding $7,800 to your farms annual revenue, and I'm thinking, "what the heck are you talking about? who is trying to make $7,800?"
maybe the title should read, "you CAN farm, you'll just never make any money doing it."
or maybe, "you can farm, but why would you want to?"
if you think you want to start a farm, you should definitely read this book. if after reading it you still want to start a farm, then I guess there's no talking you out of it, maybe it is your calling.
as for me, this book has helped me to drop all delusions of profitable farming and instead look around my community for a farmer who I can just buy my stuff from. maybe we don't need that many more Farmers, we just need more people supporting those Farmers that we do have. I never complain about price to a farmer ever in my life after reading this book.

Amazing and inspiring!
I am extremely inspired by this book. I have read additional reviews saying that this book is only philosophical and I would say that the Joel’s philosophy is a requirement for would be farmers to adopt. This book is full of advise that you couldn’t pay anyone else to sit and discuss in such detail how to successfully achieve my goals of breaking out of the everyday grind and transitioning with my family into this new lifestyle. I want it, I live it and my family is closer than they ever were. To be honest, I have found many of Joel’s philosophies essential in my life along with my family. This book has only proven that all of my dedication and hard work has worked before and that my goals are on the right track. I have an improved knowledge, better insight and I know that I am on the right track to success. Thanks Joel and God bless!

I think a few concept could be updated since the internet has changed marketing so much. But the main idea is probably more relevant today then 20 years ago. I think this book is highly inspirational and has great concepts that can be further explored. It is a general book that is meant for people without a farming background.

Great entrepreneurial book for farmers
I remember my dad going into all sorts of ventures and failing at them unfortunately at our small farm. I think he did not have the right discipline that an entrepreneur requires. Having read this book I can see where he could have done better. Unfortunately for me I have moved away from a small farm mentality but on occasions it comes back to me thinking that it would be great to have a pasture for chickens or a few acres of woodland for bees. Having read this book, I now know my limits and possibilities. It is a great read.

Nonsensical and delusional.
Joel’s speaking and recording quality is very average, he stumbles through some parts and seems to be making some parts up as he goes. Unfortunately that isn’t the worst part about this book.
It is entirely too long, in part thanks to Joels desire to constantly list things, an entirely unhelpful literary tool. Much of the information offered is entirely irrelevant and nonsensical, if not only applicable to Joel and his farm specifically. This book is riddled with generalisations, stereotypes and derogatory remarks about woman, ‘younger’ people, those who don’t farm, certain business people, government officials, those with mortgages ,most consumers and any one who happens to have more money then the average joe.
It’s intentions and message are not only misguided and borderline not applicable to the majority of people, but Joel’s entire premise for how to be a successful farmer doesn’t make ANY sense.
If you want to subscribe to Joel’s methods, don’t bother reading this book, it’s simple: don’t spend ANY money on ANYTHING, beg friends and family to do unpaid work on your farm, hire unpaid interns and just work yourself to death until you have financial fluidity. So just work endlessly and don’t do anything else for leisure (he even suggests letting your children play social sports and having a pet dog is a waste of money).
A sad and delusional book from a sad and delusional man. Absolute waste of time and money, I listened to the entire 16+ hours for the sake of fairness before reviewing and it sucked.

Dated and out of date
I saw this was released in April 2020 and thought it was a new book. It was actually written 22 years ago. His perspective on computers and personal identity are out of date and belong in the past. The recording is choppy and not the best
