The first in a new range of novels of eldritch adventure from the wildly popular Arkham Horror; an international thief of esoteric artifacts stumbles onto a nightmarish cult in 1920s New England.

Countess Alessandra Zorzi, international adventurer and thief, arrives in Arkham pursuing an ancient body freshly exhumed from a mound in Oklahoma, of curious provenance and peculiar characteristics. But before she can steal it, another party beats her to it. During the resulting gunfight at the Miskatonic Museum, the countess makes eye contact with the petrified corpse and begins an adventure of discovery outside her wildest experiences. Now, caught between her mysterious client, the police, and a society of necrophagic connoisseurs, she finds herself on the trail of a resurrected mummy as well as the star-born terror gestating within it.

I love these longer format stories. The listener is not rushed to get to know the characters. The shorter forms have their place of course, but these are great for long walks, trips, or riding the BNSF to work. At time the voice actor seemed tired, or just overworked that day. You can feel her losing steam in the middle of a long chapter. It almost plays in to the character’s personality. Greta overall i will definitely buy the next in the series.

Another Excellent Work

The reader leaves a bit to be desired. Her intonation is very flat, which makes for a boring listen.

Fine story, subpar performance

I’m just over 2 hours in & this is getting DNF along with returned. The writing is high school level but that’s not the worst of this train wreck. The narrator is one of the worst I’ve ever heard. How she has a job is beyond me. She’s Axe Norman level bad & that’s hard to accomplish as he’s the worst narrator to ever narrate anything ever. Obviously I don’t recommend this garbage to anyone.

Epically horrible!

The writing ranged from amateur to mediocre, the voice actor was flat and the story was a series of cliches and tropes strung together. It was a challenge to finish.

Mediocre at Best

Though it was not terrible, it was not what I expected from something labeled Arkham Horror. Somewhat cheesy noir, which I actually kind of like generally, and it does have a bit of Lovecraft, but not very good. Some of the characters just made me shake my head. The reader did a decent job with what they had to work with.

More noir than Lovecraft overall
