I picked this up on a whim after winning a small online tournament during lockdown. What a game-changer! Unlike most poker books drowning in complex math, Nguyen explains concepts in practical terms that actually stick when you're at the table.
The section on reading opponents transformed my game overnight. I started noticing betting patterns I'd completely missed before and adjusted my strategy accordingly. My win rate has steadily improved since implementing the 13 techniques, particularly the small ball approach that's perfect for my naturally cautious playing style.
The bankroll management chapter saved me from disaster during a rough downswing. Following the author's formula for proper stakes helped me weather the storm rather than going broke like many players I know. I appreciate the honest discussion about variance and proper mindset during inevitable losing periods.
As someone who turned poker into a profitable side income during the pandemic, this book provided the structure and strategy I needed to become consistently profitable rather than just occasionally lucky. Not a get-rich-quick scheme, but a solid roadmap for those serious about developing poker as a skill.

I don’t gamble, but this audiobook still hooked me. It’s less about cards and more about thinking strategically, taking smart risks, and balancing passion with profit. Even if you’re not into poker, there’s a lot to learn here

I went into this expecting a book about poker strategy, but it turned out to be about so much more. Sure, there’s plenty of insight into the game, but what really stood out to me was the focus on decision-making, discipline, and balancing passion with real life. The stories and personal experiences made it feel real—there’s no sugarcoating the challenges, but that’s what makes it so interesting.

Even if you’re not looking to play professionally, there are some solid takeaways here about risk, mindset, and staying sharp under pressure. It’s a fun listen that makes you think beyond just the cards!
