Publisher's summary

From Newbery Honor-winner Margi Preus, a gripping middle-grade fantasy about a girl who must save the children of her world from being “windswept"

In Tag’s world, children are disappearing. “Youngers” who venture Outside are windswept—vanishing in the swirling snow—Tag’s sisters among them. Many have tried to find the lost children; all have failed. And since the Other Times, the Powers That Be seem intent on keeping it that way.

Little remains from those times: snippets of songs, heaps of plastic trash, and a few banned texts—including a book of fairytales.

An unlikely crew of Youngers join forces—Boots, who can climb anything, Ant, who will eat anything, Ren, who will say anything, and Tag, who doesn’t appear to have any talent whatsoever. With their dubious skills, the fairytales, a possibly magic ribbon, and an unwillingness to accept “that’s impossible,” they set off to rescue their windswept siblings in this spellbinding fantasy from Newbery Honor winner Margi Preus.

Beautiful Story about the Impossible Becoming True

Margi Preus's incredible Windswept is a story of a ravaged Earth where children are taken from their homes by a mysterious wind to an unknown place. Tag-Along, (also known as Hyacinth), lost her sisters to the wind seven years ago and has been forbidden to go Outside since. However, when Tag receives a mysterious invitation to a secret meeting, she must decide whether to venture into the unknown world or to stay where it is safe. A lush fairy tale unfolds where Youngers with strange talents must work together to rescue their siblings. Impossible tasks are given and perils are faced. Villains may not be who you think they are, and a world needing change must rely on unlikely heroes for liberation.

Windswept is a delightful mesh of the fairy tale and futuristic ponderings. I loved the scenes in the houses of the Three Sisters, especially the task of milking goats using sieves, and the task of catching the wind using a saucepan, mugs and a thimble. My favorite magical object was the tablecloth. I also loved the illusions to folk songs and how a certain object was named Puff. I love how Preus interweaves fairy tale elements and defies genre conventions in her story. I also loved the Youngers, particularly Aunt and Ren. Sensory details and immersive writing made this book impossible to put down.

Laura Knight Keating reads with superb energy. I especially loved her portrayals of Ren, Tag, Ant and the Trolls.

Windswept is thoroughly recommended. Happy listening, and God bless you all.
