Publisher's summary

Written by a true rags-to-riches figure who constructed her own road to success, Win When They Say You Won't proves that aspiring women leaders don't have to wait for change to come from above to build the career of their dreams. In this book, Daphne E. Jones outlines the strategies she used to succeed, as a woman in a white male dominated STEM field, and taught to hundreds of women to help them advance, even in seemingly impossible situations. Now, she makes her methodology available to you.

Jones's "EDIT" methodology guides you down the path to a new success, creating a new version of yourself. This book will help you: Envision—figure out what isn't working, and strategically develop their vision; Design—break down prioritized objectives into small sprints and determine the actions and resources needed to achieve them; Iterate—work the plan, solicit feedback, alter the approach where needed, and persevere; and Transform—adjust to the new reality of success in healthy ways and get ready to win what's next.

EDIT means "change"—in this case, changing your mind, your life, your expectations, and outcomes. Daphne teaches listeners how to apply the EDIT process to their personal advancement. Even if you're the only woman, the only woman of color, or in a place where only men win, Jones's process will deliver the results you seek.

Our thoughts at work explained

Phenomenal story, caring content, and execution for how to beat the adversities women see in the workforce is included in every chapter!! Highly recommended for those that are working to develop and get promoted but unsure how to overcome the inlaid boys club of most organizations.

I had high hopes

The author reminds the reader throughout the book that she is a black woman professional navigating white corporate America which is part of the “they” who she's had to overcome. She has an extensive CV which is part of the reason why I picked up the book in the first place, but at times she wanders toward the self-congratulatory. Ironically, her professional advice is so generic (e.g. define your purpose, set OKRs for yourself, iterate, etc.) that it can used by anyone. It really leaves me wondering who her intended audience was supposed to be.
