Publisher's Summary

An instant New York Times best seller, Wilder Girls is Rory Power's visceral and enthralling YA debut. The Power meets We Were Liars in this compelling story of survival and the power of female friendships.

Everyone loses something to the Tox; Hetty lost her eye, Reese's hand has changed, and Byatt just disappeared completely.

It’s been 18 months since the Raxter School for Girls was put in quarantine. The Tox turned the students strange and savage, the teachers died off one by one. Cut off from the mainland, the girls don’t dare wander past the school’s fence where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure as the Tox takes, their bodies becoming sick and foreign, things bursting out of them, bits missing.

But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her best friend, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie in the wilderness past the fence. As she digs deeper, she learns disturbing truths about her school and what else is living on Raxter Island.

And that the cure might not be a cure at all....

A little disappointing

Good potential, stellar performance, but the story just didn't do it for me; maybe I'm just not a fan of this kind of fiction

I wanted to love it but I just didn't, I'm sorry!

I'm really disappointed, I think this book had so much potential but it just didn't work for me.

Wilder Girls is about a school on island that has a contagion outbreak. We enter the story when the girls have lived with the outbreak for a couple of years and are just trying to get through each day, to the best of their ability.

I actually really liked the 3 main characters, the author did a great job with the character building. The relationships between the girls are clearly intense as they're all each other has, they are family.

It's quite gruesome, you don't want to read this book if you have a weak stomach.

Sadly it just lacked depth.
I feel like there is a great idea for a story here but it wasn't built up enough.
The characters are there but not much of a world for them to live in.
The island and their surroundings could have been described in more detail. It was lacking the visual description. Which is really important to me in a book, I want the world I'm reading about to come alive in my mind.

I hate to leave such a low rating but I just have to be honest and it wasn't for me. Maybe someone else would enjoy it?!

I will say that the narration on the audio is really good.

Started out good.

I found it hard to finish this. The story just felt like it wasn't really going anywhere and nothing was really explained that well. The second narrators performance was very hard to listen to and I actually just wanted to skip those chapters. Everything was so rushed at the end. It felt like the author ran out of steam towards the end of this book.

Immersive

One of the best books I've listened to this year. This book drew me in, it had a lot of twists and turns that I saw coming but it still managed to capture the innocence of the girls and the connection between them perfectly. My only dislike was the end, I want to know what happened next.

Really Enjoyed This Book 😍😍😍

I really enjoyed this book 📖 and recommend it. I think it is structured really well and I really got too know the characters. (My favourite was definitely Reece😉) It has many unexpected plot twists and ends on a very mysterious note.

Dark and intriguing

An interesting premise and a dark undercurrent throughout the book. I lost a bit of steam near the end but not sure if it was the story or my mood. Might revisit at a later time. At this point I don't feel inclined to rest the next book but that might change later.

A really great book.

I absolutely loved this female driven, girl-power-without-being-annoying-about-it story!

If the narration feels choppy and unatural for you at first, keep listening. the book is written in a very unique way, it definitely takes both narators a while to get into the swing of things. I almost turned it off because I could feel how it was meant to be read and then weren't quite getting there but it smoothed out at the quarter way mark and turned into a real enjoyable experience!

I loved that there were a few twists I caught on to and a few didn't. also great ending xx
