Resumen del Editor

From the author of the New York Times bestselling My Dearest Darkest comes another incredible sapphic horror. When four best friends with a hunger for human flesh attend a music festival in the desert, they discover a murderous plot to expose and vilify the girls and everyone like them. This summer is going to get gory.

Two years ago, a small percentage of population underwent a transformation known as the Hollowing. Those affected were only able to survive by consuming human flesh. The people who went without quickly became feral, turning on their friends and family. Luckily, scientists were able to create a synthetic version of human meat that would satisfy their hunger. As a result, humanity slowly began to return to normal.

Cut to Zoey, Celeste, Valeria, and Jasmine, four hollow girls living in Southern California. As a last hurrah before graduation they decide to attend a musical festival in the heart of the desert. They have a cooler filled with seltzer, vodka, and Synflesh… and are ready to party.

But on the first night of the festival Val goes feral and ends up killing and eating a boy in one of the bands. As other festival guests start disappearing around them the girls soon discover someone is targeting people like them. And if they can't figure out how to stop it, and soon, no one at the festival is getting out alive.

Fun and Wild ride

It’s a nice twist to a zombie (or ghoul in this case) apocalypse. The girls are fun and are just trying to make some memories. 🤩

Absolutely fantastic!

Slightly immature writing at moments, but frikken fantastic!

Enough gore to be horror.
Enough LGBT content to be romantic.
AND A WHOLE LOTTA GIRL SAS!

What a great introduction to Kayla Cottingham - I can’t wait for my next!

Ghoulfriends

Okay this is an example of YA that I had a really fun time reading! It was so cute, and the end was satisfying, it’s like Jennifers Body meets Warm Bodies in a reverse murder mystery

As a Jennifer’s Body girly… this was perfect

This was the perfect book. It had heart, gore, and a killer story. Finished it in one sitting! This book has no bad reviews for a reason, I would recommend this to anyone who loves Jennifer’s body or had a weird creepy pasta obsession as a child because this filled a hole in my heart. Love love love it

Cottingham does it again

At first, I struggled with the music festival setting given that it isn't my scene, but Cottingham uses this incredibly public yet remote setting to their advantage. This sci-fi horror has action, romance, and mystery while dripping with metaphors of the lived LGBTQ+ experience (and also blood). If you loved My Dearest Darkest, you'll love this one, too. Cottingham is distinguishing themselves amongst other horror/thriller authors, even masterfully switching from first-person to third-person while expertly crafting flashbacks and a lived-in world. Especially now as the LGBTQ+ community in under attack, it's nice to read something that doesn't make you feel so alone.

not what I expected

Ironically, I would say it's a cozy read. A great beginner book if you want to dive into the horror genre. Would definitely recommend

What a fun book!

This was a great YA horror, mystery, and queer love story all in one! The queer love story was cute, the mystery and plot kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat needing to know what was going to happen, and the gore even hit the spot, too! I really enjoyed the aspect of the Hallowing, and learning about it and how it affected people. Like, we thought Covid was bad, but in comparison to the Hallowing, it wasn’t shit lol… 🤣
Anyway, this book was great, and I had so much fun reading it. The audio wasn’t bad; it wasn’t the best I’ve ever heard, but it also wasn’t the worst, either. It was definitely good enough for me to still enjoy the entire book while I read along with the physical copy at the same time.
I am definitely going to read Kayla Cottingham‘s other book, called “My Dearest Darkest”, and I look forward to anything else she writes in the future!

Meh

I read/listened to this book for book club. This is supposed to be a "Spooky Girl" book club and I learned from joining is that I must be extremely morbid lol. I found this book to be G rated and too YA for a true horror book fan. I thought that the narrator did a great job with giving each character their own personality and voices. The book is set after a vast majority of the world was stricken with a virus that turned them into something else. It kinda glossed over what could have been an amazing storyline, and just went from "oh hey, this happened and now we're headed to a music fest". IDK....This was just not for me.
