Micheal E. Jimerson
For 30 years, E.J. Kane exemplified perfection in law enforcement. But when he loses a son to the war on terror in Afghanistan, both his marriage and his career as a Texas Ranger are crushed. Incapable of acknowledging his daughter’s drug addiction, she ends up sex trafficked. His last chance job as head of security at an energy company pulls him into the romantic clutches of a ruthless businesswoman known as Widow Welchel. She allies with a sovereign citizen group stealing casinghead gas, also known as white gold.
E.J.’s ex-wife’s skill as an attorney reveals that his lover, Widow Welchel, murdered those in her path to take over the giant energy company. The killer offers her dark web trafficking connections to locate E.J.’s daughter, but her help comes at great cost. She exacts a crippling promise.
E.J. may save his daughter, yet keeping his word sacrifices the personal code which has driven every part of his life. Can he hold fast to ancient notions of honor while using 21st century technology to end the killing and restore his family?

Having proudly served the state he loves for 30 years, he's been put out to pasture. Losing his son in Afghanistan, his wife to divorce, and his daughter to drugs sure hasn't helped his outlook any. Now he's head of security for a huge corporation that may or may not be advancing global warming and hastening the demise of the planet--it depends on who you talk to. How the mighty have fallen.
E.J.'s simple and largely uneventful security gig has hit a few snags, though, and he's got some detecting to do. Along the way, he'll butt heads with local law enforcement, especially in the form of one Sheriff B.B. (as he's known). He'll also go a few rounds with some addicts, drug dealers, power brokers... all of whom are a waste of space and oxygen.
The characters here are pretty nicely fleshed out, and you get to know several of them pretty well along the course of E.J.'s mission; people like the Widow (who seems to be adored by all) and Son (yep, that's what he's known as). It's an interesting case of 'who the ** can you trust?'
I only have one complaint with this story, and that's the fact that I chose the audiobook instead of reading the standard format. This is one of those golden examples of why authors should never narrate their own books. Even though Jimerson's accent and general tone are nearly perfect for the storyline, he's obviously just not experienced at this. Unfortunately, that plays to the detriment of his book in this case.
My recommendation? If you're into damaged alpha male thrillers with heart and plenty of action, go for it. Just get the book instead of the audio.
