Story
Children have always disappeared under the right conditions - slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere...else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced...they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

Story
Meet Roger. Skilled with words, languages come easily to him. He instinctively understands how the world works through the power of story. Meet Dodger, his twin. Numbers are her world, her obsession, her everything. All she understands, she does so through the power of math. Roger and Dodger aren’t exactly human, though they don’t realize it. They aren’t exactly gods, either. Not entirely. Not yet. Meet Reed, skilled in the alchemical arts like his progenitor before him. Reed created Dodger and her brother. He’s not their father. Not quite. But he has a plan.

The world of Faerie never disappeared: it merely went into hiding, continuing to exist parallel to our own. Secrecy is the key to Faerie’s survival—but no secret can be kept forever, and when the fae and mortal worlds collide, changelings are born. Half-human, half-fae, outsiders from birth, these second-class children of Faerie spend their lives fighting for the respect of their immortal relations.

For most people, the story of their lives is just that: the accumulation of time, encounters, and actions into a cohesive whole. But for an unfortunate few, that day-to-day existence is affected - perhaps infected is a better word - by memetic incursion: where fairy tale narratives become reality, often with disastrous results.

Story
Avery is an exceptional child. Everything he does is precise, from the way he washes his face in the morning to the way he completes his homework - without complaint, without fuss, without prompt. Zib is also an exceptional child, because all children are, in their own way. But where everything Avery does and is can be measured, nothing Zib does can possibly be predicted, except for the fact that she can always be relied upon to be unpredictable. They live on the same street. They live in different worlds.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Publisher's Summary
In Where the Drowned Girls Go, the next addition to Seanan McGuire's beloved Wayward Children series, students at an anti-magical school rebel against the oppressive faculty.
"Welcome to the Whitethorn Institute. The first step is always admitting you need help, and you’ve already taken that step by requesting a transfer into our company."
There is another school for children who fall through doors and fall back out again.
It isn't as friendly as Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children.
And it isn't as safe.
When Eleanor West decided to open her school, her sanctuary, her "Home for Wayward Children", she knew from the beginning that there would be children she couldn’t save; when Cora decides she needs a different direction, a different fate, a different prophecy, Miss West reluctantly agrees to transfer her to the other school, where things are run very differently by Whitethorn, the Headmaster.
She will soon discover that not all doors are welcoming....

Whitney Johnson didn't do it for me
Hi. I've listened to this entire series on Audible. I love the plot and the back and forth of the books and learning about all the characters. I enjoyed every reading EXCEPT this one. I'm not sure where Whitney Johnson got her "voice" to portray Sumi, but it threw me off during the whole novel. I usually listen at work while I'm doing other things and can follow along pretty well. Every time I heard the voice I had to stop and think about who was speaking. It was high and squeaky and that's not at all what the character of Sumi sounds like in my head OR how she should sound by her character development. All of the other speakers (including Seanan herself) kept the changes in pitch pretty consistent throughout all of the books. This one was different. As a listener...you should be aware before listening to it.

Unsettled but Settled
It seems every single one of these series installments leaves you both unsettled at all the things left in knots, and settled for the things that were undone. Satisfying yet unsatisfying… I guess that's perfect for the nature of this series. Still such an enjoyable world!!!

too close to home,
like all books in this series, I love this book so much. and having a whole story with just Cora was amazing. she's the perfect pov, clear minded, strong willed and an absolute hero. and she's fat, like me! fat and athletic!
but joining her mind, hearing the cruelty from in the outside echoing inside was hard. worth it but hard.
no. my own complaint is how the narrator does Sumi's voice. she should have been bright and sharp, like the tip if a sucked on candy cane. instead the reader has her slow and dull. there's not manic glee in sumi, or viciousness.

Great universe, but slow pacing
I love the universe McGuire has built and this story had great potential. It just too long to past the cruelty of the school to understand what was happening. Once we got the reveal, the book ended abruptly. Unlike the rest of the books in the series, we never got the magical adventure that has made the stories so wonderful.
I would still buy the book again because McGuire knows how to write characters.

Left feeling... empty.
Normally I don't mind that these books are so short because they are so vivid and Seanan is so maddeningly brilliant that it doesn't matter. Yet, for the first time I feel as if she tried to pack too much of her brilliance in too small a package. More package, less duct tape please!

At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children. Both paths promise a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class. Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her pedigree is a lie. She must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society. And school couldn’t prepare her for the difficult choices she must make after graduation.
