Publisher's summary

On February 15, 2015, Kate Matrosova, an avid mountaineer, set off before sunrise for a traverse of the Northern Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Late the following day, rescuers carried her frozen body out of the mountains amid some of the worst weather ever recorded on these deceptively rugged slopes.

At thirty-two, Matrosova was ultra-fit and healthy and had already summited much larger mountains on several continents. Her gear included a rescue beacon and a satellite phone. Yet, despite their best efforts, more than forty expert search and rescue personnel, a New Hampshire Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter, and a Civil Air Patrol Cessna airplane could not reach her in time to save her.

What went wrong?

Where You'll Find Me offers possible answers to that question, demonstrating why Matrosova's story—what we know and what we will never know—represents such an intriguing and informative case study in risk analysis and decision-making.

Crucial info for hikers!

Recommended reading after the NE hiking community lost one of their own over Thanksgiving weekend 2022.

This is a super smart and helpful retelling and analysis of an experienced mountaineer who challenged the forces of nature in the White Mountains of NH. Really useful information for novice and seasoned outdoorsman alike. So glad I listened to it, even despite the sad known story of loss that it centers on.

Well written

Although difficult to listen to, this insightful account gives pause to all of us who venture above tree line in winter. Stay safe out there, friends.

Gripping, heart wrenching story

Ty Gagne is a great storyteller. He delivers all the facts and details without bias in this unfortunate circumstance. I have a new respect for the mountains having lived in New Hampshire, my whole life and hiking most of the 48.

Risk & Loss

Really well-written. Hearing more details, especially of those from the SAR teams, gives one even more respect for the mountains, the weather, and to those who are there to try to help us should our day in the Whites go awry. Hike safe.

Thoughtful

This story is very thought provoking. It should be read by anyone considering doing serious hiking above treeline in the Whites, especially in winter.
