Publisher's Summary

The number-one New York Times best-selling author and Queen of Suspense launched her career with this classic thriller following a woman whose past holds a terrible secret.

Nancy Harmon long ago fled the heartbreak of her first marriage, the macabre deaths of her two little children, and the shocking charges against her. She changed her name, dyed her hair, and left California for the windswept peace of Cape Cod. Now remarried, she has two more beloved children, and the terrible pain has begun to heal - until the morning when she looks in the backyard for her little boy and girl and finds only one red mitten. She knows that the nightmare is beginning again....

Classic MHC

The authors intro of this novel as her first accepted by her publisher, and now released as an Anniversary edition of its first publication is for authors loyal fans. All the positive reviews on this story can attest to the authors fanship.
I purchased this novel on members only sale due to my new fave narrator January LaVoy, who performed authors I’ve Got My Eyes On You so well that I went looking for more of her reads by this author. I do use the 1.25x speed to match the adventure.
This is my third story by this author in which Ms LaVoy narrates and she does a fabulous job of bring this story to life.
However, if you have trouble with characters who are in a shell shocked state of mind, as I do, you may want to pass on this novel if it is your first exposure to this author or Ms LaVoy as I truly feel you must be a devoted fan of author.
The publishers summery is spot on so no need to add to it. This story seems to stand the test of time for the authors fans.
The subject matter is pretty hard to take and like another reviewer states this novel is not for me either.
This story is certainly not like a Karin Slaughter novel, so no gore, happy to say.
Author is re publishing her earlier novels so I will seek those stories that have a strong heroine that are narrated by Ms LaVoy

Pediphelia is not good entertainment

I guess I read this book when I was about 12 and did not process the overall disgusting nature of the story line. I had to skip over a lot in this book. It was really offensive. I love MHC but hated this experience.

QUEEN OF ROMANTIC SUSPENSE

It’s easy to see why Mary Higgins Clark is considered to be the Queen of Romantic Suspense. On her first swing, she hits it out of the park. Perfectly written and brilliantly narrated, this book is a gem.

OMG! The Best MHC Book Written

This is the best Mary Higgins Clark book I have ever read. This was her first book she wrote and published, and again, the best in my opinion. It was slightly different than her other works. A more sensitive topic (dealing with pedophilia) was undertaken, but nicely written in a way that describes the depravity of the criminal without gorry details.
January LaVoy narrated the story with such richness that made the characters come alive.
Nicely done MHC, nicely done. I haven't read Kiss the Girls yet, but I do hope that you decide to tackle more provocative topics in the near future. It doesn't have to be pedophilia though.

So so bad

I can’t believe how bad this book was. I returned it. The main character is stupid and psycho herself, the whole town heard or saw something and in a series of “ circumstances” no one says anything. Can’t tell you how much I hated it.

loved it

Pleasant voice, no excessive pauses or mouth smacking, great voice expression, very much enjoyed listening. I love Mary Higgens Clark. I used to read every single book she wrote, including this one. This was like reading it for the first time again. Very much recommend.
