Publisher's summary

Survival. It's a concept these high school students never had to consider - until their plane crashes in a remote rainforest with no adults left alive. With many of them falling prey to threats from both the jungle and man, they soon realize that danger comes in many sinister forms.

Tom Calloway didn't want to go on a field trip to Costa Rica, but circumstances had him ending up sitting in the back of the plane - which was the only part that was intact after the crash in the remote South American wilderness. Tom and a small group of his classmates are fortunate to be alive, but their luck quickly runs out when some of them fall prey to the unfamiliar threats of the jungle - animals, reptiles, insects, and even the unforgiving heat. Every decision they make could mean life or death.

As the days go by and the survivors' desperation grows, things get even more perilous. Not everyone can cope with the trauma of seeing their friends die, and a struggle for leadership soon pits them against each other. And when they come across evidence of other people in the middle of the rainforest, does that mean they're safe - or has their survival come to an even more vicious end?

Critic reviews

"The constantly building tension and dread will propel even the most reluctant readers through to the end." (Booklist)

"To survive the heat and predators, the group will have to rely on their skills and each other-easier said than done when insecurities and stubbornness become lethal.... The tried-and-true tropes of survival narratives along with empowering teen expertise are featured well." (Kirkus Reviews)

"A brilliant blend of modern adventure and Lord of the Flies, When We Were Lost is a riveting contemporary page-turner and ideal reading for teenage boys." (Sarah Pinborough, best-selling author of 13 Minutes and Behind Her Eyes)

"An adrenaline-fueled adventure, which meditates on fate while exploring the effects of adversity and grief. Nuanced character interactions help ground the action-studded plot."(Publishers Weekly)

Hard to stop listening!

I loved the audiobook! The narrator was perfect! Warning, if you listen to audiobooks to get work done, be prepared to find yourself stopped and listening more times than not!

I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I love stories of survival, especially wilderness survival and this story was plausible and kept me interested. I also appreciated that there was no sex or cursing. The narrarator did an excellent job.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Listened to this on a family road trip. It was a hit with parents and two teens (13 and 16). Made the drive go by quickly. Highly recommend.

Odd puzzle piece out.

It’s no Lord of the Flies but it is good, and the spider part creeped me out big time. I enjoyed this story, a lot of this type of adventure has been done before, but it is the interaction between the characters that make this a enjoyable story. A teenage survival story that was a clean story. No sex, and while there is violence, it is tastefully done with out gore. I would read more by this author. Narrator embodies the main character well.

Would definitely recommend!!

This book was well written and read (by audible). For my first audible experience, I’d definitely do it again. The story is an adventure, a tale of ups and downs through the jungle. I got hooked and couldn’t stop listening to this book! I love how it circles around at the end (don’t worry this doesn’t really spoil anything!) and really wraps the whole thing up:)

Great story with great narration. Kept me interested all the way through. I think the ending could have been better but another great story from Kevin Wignall
