Publisher's Summary

They came four years ago. Invaded our planet, rounded us up, and decimated the human race. We fought back, and some even say we won, but they're wrong. The invaders took everything from us. Our family. Our hope. Our humanity. We won the war, but there are no humans left. Only monsters who will do anything to survive. Some look human and some don't, but they are all the same.

Eighteen-year-old Eva has spent the last year punishing herself for her sister's death and hiding from everyone she comes into contact with, human or otherwise. With the population destroyed and Earth left in ruins, she sees little hope left for the future.

But when she crosses paths with Walker and Tara, something inside her awakens. Something she thought had died along with her entire family. In these new friends Eva sees a promise of what the future could be, as well as evidence that humanity might not be extinct after all.

When a ghost from Eva's past makes an unexpected appearance, the group sets out on a cross-country trek that will teach Eva how to love and hope again, and will remind her what it truly means to be human.

Alien Apocalypse

An alien race invaded Earth four years ago. Though Earth won, there were few survivors and a mostly decimated landscape remained. Small groups of survivors have banded together in search of a new existence - and humanity. When Eva meets Walker and Tara, she discovers hope for a new beginning.

I enjoyed Eva's story of torment and survival. She had become as ruthless as the aliens that had tried to take over the planet. It was difficult for her to trust others after seeing the worst of mankind when they had been liberated, only to be in another kind of prison. There were some terrifying moments as well as a little romance to keep my interest. The story seemed open-ended at the conclusion and I suspect there might be a sequel. It was mentioned that the aliens that remained appeared to be regrouping for a possible future attack, so I can easily envision another book. BettySoo's voice was age appropriate for the characters and I could easily distinguish between them. She did an excellent job of drawing in the listener and conveying their emotions. When We Were Human was an enjoyable listening experience and I would recommend it.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is my honest opinion.

But hiding isn’t surviving

If you are looking for an action-packed post-apocalyptic adventure, this isn’t the book for you. However, if you want a book that explores the after-effects of “winning” (or losing, depends on who you talk to in the book) a war with an alien race and one girl’s quest to find her lost sister, then you will fall in love with this book.

Usually, in post-apocalyptic books, I’m expecting action and adventure but Kate L. Mary took a different approach to this novel, and it was very successful. The book starts with Eva being hiding alone and still reeling from losing her sister. She stumbles across Walker and Tara who take her in and start to show her how to feel again. I thought this was a clever plot as it shows more of the emotional side of a world in chaos. Reading so much fantasy, I’m used to people taking action and going to war that it this was a nice reprieve.

Since this was not focused on the action there were some points that did tend to drag on. While they never lasted long, it felt more like a repeat. Certain instances I felt like I read only a little bit ago for them to be mentioned again but with different wording. This didn’t take the focus away from the story but it the few times it happened, I was anxious to move on. Overall, this had a really good pace and feel to it. There were a couple of intense scenes that had me on the edge of my seat because even though this was more of an emotional story, there are still aliens on Earth.

I absolutely loved the character development in this novel, especially Eva. When she is first introduced, she is hurting and alone. Trust doesn’t come easy in a world like this and neither does happiness. But after teaming with Walker and Tara, she finds that it’s good to have other people around and not be on her own – that there is still goodness left in the world. Even Tara and Walker’s personalities change after finding Eva. Their adventure together definitely teaches them new perspectives in life.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting but it really hit close to the heart and I love it when books surprise me like that. With a great plot and descriptive story, Kate L. Mary really makes this post-apocalyptic world believable. Even though there were some moments that seemed to repeat themselves, the book had great pacing and fantastic writing kept me invested the entire time. Eva was a fantastic main character to follow in this journey and really watch her grow into a fierce character. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a great post-apocalyptic read with flawed characters who still put up a fight.

Betty Soo did a really fantastic job narrating this story. Her voice really portrayed Eva’s story and guided us through her world. I really enjoy it when narrators act out what the person is actually doing (yawning, talking with food in mouth, etc.) and BettySoo took the time to add those little details in. It truly adds to the experience of listening to the audio. The scenes that were supposed to be intense were and if it was a quieter scene, it was quiet. I would definitely recommend this audio.

THIS WAS A GREAT STORY!!!

Eva has just about given up. she is practically feral...She comes across Walker and Tara and of course, she is very leery of them. She knows in this new world you can not trust most people. They are very calm and kind to her and she starts to warm up...They quickly form a bond and Eva comes slowly back to life, learning there is room for friendship and love in the alien apocalypse!! I really enjoyed this story...the characters are really well written, and the narrator was perfect! I hope Kate decides to write another one...I want to know what's going to happen with those leftover aliens...they definitely have a vendetta with Eva!!!

COMPLETELY RECOMMEND!! GREAT LISTEN FOR ANY AGE!!!

Amazing

This book has something for everyone love, dystopian, killing, and action. The author weaves an intricate story that leaves you guessing and rooting for the characters. The narrator does a fantastic job breathing life into the characters. She pulls you into the book and you really do not want it to end. I am hoping there will be sequel so we cam see what damage the main characters can continue to do. Great book to add to your dystopian library!

Interesting take on Alien Apocalypse

When We Were Human tells the story of 18-year-old Eva, who was orphaned in the alien apocalypse four years earlier. She and her younger sister survived for years, only to be separated when her sister was abducted by the aliens (or Creepers, as Eva calls them) a year before the story begins. Eva has been wandering alone, doing what she must to find food and shelter, and punishing herself for her sister's capture, for which she feels responsible. Eva meets two other survivors, Walker and Tara, and they set out together to find a place to settle down.

The story has adventure, mild violence, mystery, and a little romance. It's an entertaining book that ends in a way that is satisfying yet open to a sequel. The main characters are largely likeable, although I had trouble relating to Eva's self-harm. The setting is an interesting take on paranormal/apocalypse/sci-fi, but I would have preferred more detail on exactly what happened and the current state of the world. For example, it's unclear if the invasion was limited to the US or occurred all over the world. It's also unclear just how many people are still around and whether there is any effort to rebuild, now that the war has been won by the humans. If there is a sequel, more world-building would be helpful.

The narrator is very good; however, the pauses between sentences were too long for me, so I listened at 1.25x speed, which was a little too fast for some of the dialogue but preferable to lengthy pauses. I enjoyed her tone, style, and voices, though.

Overall, I liked the story. It kept me engaged, and I finished it, which is saying a lot compared to many books I've listened to lately! I recommend this story for anyone who enjoys YA and paranormal/apocalypse/sci-fi books.

I received this audiobook free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

aliens never seemed so ugly

As always the narrator of this book was excellent. I find Kate L Mary has a talent for finding women who really know how to bring her stories life. the story itself. post apocalypse, aliens, a bit of love. what's not to love.

Fabulous

When We Were Human is another riveting tale by Kate L. Mar. The plot is well-compose and gripping sci-fi alien apocalypse. The characters are well-developed, intriguing, and appealing. The story grabs hold of you and sucks you into a new and compelling world, engrossing you to the very end.

BettySoo's performance is notable. Her emulations of the characters' personalities and emotions are spot on, further immersing the listener. Overall, this is a perfectly-written and descriptive story with marvelous characters and outstanding narration, and I highly recommend it. Needed more story

This is my review from Amazon, since I own the ebook too.
First off, I absolutely love the narrator. She keeps you drawn into the story. She is brilliant with the voices. Bravo!!

This is my review from Amazon, since I own the ebook too.

I first must say I love the human characters. But, some felt like they were added just to add them. Not fully defined. Ben pops into my mind. Some not fully fleshed out. I’d have loved some back story on some.
And the “ bad “ characters, non humans, seriously needed more storyline. Not just there.
But my biggest problem is the ending. No resolve on the storyline. Just...done. I need and want more. No, done, all over. Felt incomplete.
I have a lot of other books by this author. Not read them and they’ll get pushed back now.

Remembering what it's like to be human

Eva knows that the human race won the war but now she has to win the battle to remember her humanity. This book has a strong storyline and even stronger characters. It's been years since the alien invasion has demolished the Earth and now the survivors have to get through this apocalyptic world to rebuild.
When We Were Human is well written and I highly recommend that you read it you might just learn something about yourself. I received this audio book at my request and I am voluntarily leaving a totally honest review.
