Publisher's Summary

Red: Lázhien’s human. A common Imperial soldier. And my soulmate. How could fate get it so wrong? The demon in me craves this bond with every shred of his being. He pushes me to accept it. This time I won’t yield to his demands.

Lázhien: Red’s a lust demon, a whore and a stuck-up snob. The most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. Pain in the arse. And he hates my guts. I’d be an idiot to pursue him. Yet something about him compels me to make him mine.

When I First Saw Red is a complete and stand-alone short novel with an HEA ending, featuring a couple of reluctant fated soulmates - a demon and a human - trying and failing to defy destiny.

Excellent

I was looking forward to listening to this story. I read it when it came out, and I loved it. In fact, I read it three times in a row..that's how much I liked it. I loved the characters and the love story. The order Universe created by Kasia Bacon is fascinating, and so are her characters. So I jumped at the chance to listen to this story as soon as I had the chance, and I must admit it did not disappoint at all. In fact, I did more or less the same that I did with the written version, I listened to it three times on a row… Cornell Collins’ performance of this story brings the characters to life, providing them with nuances which make them richer and deeper. It specially surprised me his interpretation of Lazhien, whom I had imagined somehow different, maybe softer, but I like Cornell’s version better: rougher and sweeter at the same time.
A great narration to match a great story

Okkano and Lahzien

The idea of a half-elf and half-incubus intrigued me. Okkano carries around wounds, prejudices, and a low sense of self worth from his past. Lahzien's struggles with guilt have him accepting Okkano's rejection. I loved that Ranelle does her duty as the interfering best friend and drags these two together.

Audiobook: The narrator does a marvelous job.

Fantasy for every type of fantasy reader

As always Bacon does a wonderful job of immediately putting you in the story. I loved the two MCs and they are wonderful together. Plus there's a secondary character I'm really hoping we get more from. Absolutely wonderful. Bacon also is fantastic at making inclusivity a natural part of the story flow which I always appreciate. I love how snarky her characters are while also being sweethearts underneath the sarcasm.

I was so excited to find out that Bacon had gotten this narrator. He always does a wonderful job and his voice for both the MCs was spot on! I noticed a lot more details while listening to his narration and it made me love the characters and the story that much more!

So hot!

I love Kasia Bacon’s books so much! The characters felt so real and the development of their relationship was so good! Their interactions made me laugh a lot. Especially in the beginning when they first met. I loved the world and how rich the culture is along with the different species. Lazhien and Red are definitely too cute together even if it took them a little bit to truly trust one another. The narrator did a fantastic job with the different characters and I loved their voices so much.

Great Performance and Very Steamy

The performance by Cornell was stellar however for me the story was difficult to get into. I going to give it a relisten when I have a few hours of uninterrupted time to focus on the story more.

Fantastic!

This audiobook is brilliant, I absolutely loved it. The two main characters are like chalk and cheese - one’s a down to earth drill sergeant and the other is a stuck up, aristocratic half demon. The two are drawn together as the demon part of Red has seen that Lazhien is his soul mate. Red is really not happy about and don’t we get to know about it! The dialogue is witty and fun, and the characters are brilliant. I can’t say enough good things about it.

To top it off the narration is perfect. Cornell Collins is a new narrator to me, but I will definitely be looking for other books he’s narrated. The voices he gave the characters were spot on - Lazhien is gruff and to the point, Red is imperious and a snob. Loved the narration

I received an arc of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review

a fascinating story

When I First Saw Red is Book 2 in the Soldiers and Mercenaries series. This is a well written fascinating short story about Red and Lázhien. This book captured me from the very beginning. Lázhien knew he wanted time with the demon the first time setting eyes on him, and it didn't matter the cost. Red and Lázhien may be fated, but they fought it until they realize they really were better together. This is an enjoyable book and you don't want to miss it.
Narrator Cornell Collins does an amazing job. He really brings this book to life.

Great Story & Narration🎧 Fascinating & Original!

I enjoyed this book immensely, it is my first written by Kasia Bacon and she has an impressive writing style and way with words, she created a fascinating and imaginative story, a story that grabs your attention immediately and holds it captive for the entire book. There is great world building and character development. This story is a story of soulmates, one a paranormal being, a lust demon, a succubus, the other a human, a soldier, neither one was looking for the other but turns out fate had other plans for them. Ōkkanȏ “Red” Kyatto is the succubus and whore by trade, Lázhien is the soldier who is looking for a good time. He locked eyes with Red and knows he needs to spend the spend time with him, but Red is sought after and but Lázhien finds away to buy himself time with him. And what a time it is, but both get more than they bargained for, it turns out he is Red’s fated mate. Red is not looking for a mate, and it pisses his inner demon off that he wants to break that bond. This did not please Lázhien, but things have a way of working out with help from unlikely sources. There is some brilliant dialogue in this cleverly plotted story that has the perfect balance of drama, angst, humor, heartfelt and emotional moments, and some steamy romance. Kasia Bacon, thank you for this wonderfully original and entertaining story.

🎧📚🎧 And for the terrific narration, Cornell Collins did a fabulous job bringing the characters and their story to life, giving each their own voice and personality, making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. His portrayal of the characters was spot on, he had a complete understanding of each character he portrayed, sounding believable in every role he played and just as I pictured the character to sound. He set the perfect tone for the story, captured the character’s emotions and projected them into his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the great listen.

Love this author

Another excellent book in this connected fantasy universe. This time it's fated mates, but nothing runs smoothly with a half-elf/incubus whose cattiness is a front for many insecurities and who is determined he'll not be mated.
Hawt, hawt, hawt, with two complex but adorable characters.
Despite being in a shared universe there is no requirement to read any other story to make sense of this. It definitely stands alone.
What can I say about the narrator? It's Cornell Collins and he's absolutely brilliant as usual.

Highly recommended.

When I First Saw Red

Interesting and original story with excellent writing. I enjoyed the listen, and the narration was good - I did speed up slightly, but that's due to personal preference. Great chemistry, and while shorter, it doesn't feel lacking in any way. I'd recommend.

Enemies to lovers, fated mates

I love this author's characters and there is also always amazing world building in her books.
Red and Lazhien are complete polar opposites having been raised in different environments.
There is instant animosity between them that quickly ratchets up to sizzling chemistry both try to deny.
I absolutely loved Red's sassy, snarky self and Lazhien's stoic steadfastness.
Cornell Collins did an amazing job bringing these characters to life.

Audio was everything I could ask for!

Original book review below, but first just a gush about the audio. Cornell Collins was the absolute perfect choice for this story! I’m always a little wary when a book I love is brought to audio as there is so much that could go wrong, but here everything went perfectly right. All the emotions I felt while reading were just increased and I still finished feeling incredibly happy with such an amazing story.

This is a phenomenal story. Longer than Bacon's previous works, it still gives you a complete world in the pages of the story, so that it can be read as a stand-alone if wanted. The best reluctant mates story I have ever read, you can absolutely feel the longing, and the pain, radiating off the two MCs as they try to deny fate and not create a bond between the two. Red and Lazhien have SCORCHING chemistry together, and you root for them the entire time, but it's also quite compelling that there is an out to fate in this world. It makes for a much more tense situation, as there is no telling where the two will end up. Both characters are well-rounded and complete, and my heart hurt for them as it was so obvious each wanted the same thing, someone to love and be loved by in return. A human soldier and a split soul elf/lust demon might not seem like they would work too well together, but Bacon proves that wrong with this story and creates a hard won, but beautiful, HEA.

Quite a pairing

Red is a complicated character being half elf and half succubus. He's also snarky and wonderful to watch fall for the human Lazhien. These two initially hit it off as well as oil and water, but as they continue to interact their attraction is intense and is completely believable. The author has created and interesting world and I intend to go back and read the first book to see more of it. I enjoyed Cornell Collins' performance very much. He hit all the emotional marks for me.

A sexy, emotional, fantastical romance

Lázhien and Red's romance captivated me from the first few sentences, and I remained entranced the whole time I was listening. Cornell Collins is a new narrator for me, and he did a wonderful job chronicling these men's journey. From the snarky, sarcastic way he portrayed Red to his gruffer, dominating voice for Lázhien, Collins made these characters come to life for me. The writing style of this story was also exquisite, and I genuinely enjoyed the back and forth these characters had when first realizing their mate bond. Their sexual chemistry was off-the-charts, insanely intoxicating, but what intrigued me even more was the emotional battle these men went through. It was fascinating to see the dual souls of Red and his demon side fight each other, and Lázhien certainly didn't reveal his feelings easily either. For a while I was in despair about these idiots letting their bond break for good, but luckily they got their act together before it was too late. It's hard to believe how hard the two of them fought against fate after seeing how sweet and settled they were in the epilogue, but I suppose the ending wouldn't have been as satisfying had it been smooth sailing the entire way.

Really Good

When I First Saw Red is the second book in the Soldiers and Mercenaries series, but it can easily stand on its own. I did not read the first book in the series before this one, but did not feel lost or like I was missing anything. I will, however, be reading the first book soon because this series is so good and interesting. I was a little worried that the world building might be a bit complex for such a short book, but that fear was laid to rest immediately. Kasia does a great job explaining the important details and then diving right into the plot and romance. I loved the concept of a soulbond bringing two radically different people together and making it work. There was drama and a small amount of angst, but the ending was so satisfying.

Cornell Collins does a fantastic job with the audio. His performance is top notch and extremely enjoyable to listen to.

Demon and human

Two people who had nothing in common and everything to say that things were not meant to be, so a relationship between a human and a demon isn't normal, but to these two, it meant everything,

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I enjoyed this story and the characters.

Cornell Collins, as always, was a pleasure to listen to, clean and concise. I did speed up this narration which is usual for me.

Not great but not bad either

I had no idea this was the 2nd book in a series. I thought it was the first, so I'm not sure if me feeling lost about the universe was because of that or because this series is a spin-off or connects in some way with another series. I would have like some info for the universe apart from the index we got in the beginning about the soulmates of incubus and how that whole thing worked in that world.

Another thing is that as much as I appreciated the narrator's pacing, performance and accent, some times, maybe because this is my first time with Kasia Bacon's stories and terminologies, words sounded like a total jumble of syllables to me that I couldn't make sense.

Story wise... well... if the chemistry and relationship between the MCs was developed more and had them being together at the same place and time for more than 30% of the story, they weren't all that much together not even at the epilogue, but more about how Red had settled with Lázhien at their house within the military compound, it wouldn't have gone amiss.
