Publisher's summary

Experience one of the first novels from New York Times best-selling author Ted Dekker.

A thriller unlike any you have ever heard. A love strong enough to bring a tremor to your bones. A sacrifice powerful enough to make heaven weep.

At the close of World War II, a shell-shocked solider, Jan Jovic, was forced to inflict a game of life and death on a peaceful Bosnian community. In a few short hours, this young man was confronted by more love - and hate - than most experience in a lifetime.

Years later, Jan has become a world-renowned writer with widespread influence in the United States, his past buried deep in his memory. Until at the most inopportune time, the game Jan witnessed comes back to haunt him...and unwittingly leads him to a beautiful but broken woman caught in an underworld of crime.

He must now defeat an evil rarely seen. But there is a price. One that even this war-scarred solider can't imagine.

Another Winner

Drawing on the story of Hosea & Gomer in gripping detail. I think there’s a bit of Helen in each of us, isn’t there?

The lessons I learned- they were subtle and God spoke to me through this book as well has the first book.

I loved the whole book!!! I love all of Ted Dekkers books!! They seem to be written with Gods messages to me.

Not his best

The story line got a little repetitive and eventually it became boring and it started to becone monotonous. However when the book wrapped up you understood why we continued to go down that path so many times.

Good but redundant

Generally good modernization of Hosea but the author tends to DRAG out many of his books (including this one) and lose salient threads that were started. He’s become a better writer since this book but even so, this one could be 30% shorter without losing any major themes

Dekker never disappoints

Very good story. Kept me engaged and gives one much to think about in relation to God’s love for us and how He never stops pursuing us.

A Tale of what true love looks like

I absolutely love this book; I could hardly stop reading it. It was a powerful, well written allegory of God's long-suffering love for His Bride; The Church. The plot was gripping, taut with suspense; writing with such realism it causes me to search my own heart, to make sure that I wouldn't allow my emotions to drag me into an emotional hell, but that I would remember that they are nothing in comparison to the breathtaking faithfulness of Christ. May I grow to love Him like this!¡

Karen dodged a bullet.

I understand that this is an allegory that's not lost on me, but this is the most cringe book I have ever read.
it's illogical and a poorly thought out storyline.
The main character falls uncontrollably in love in two interactions and 3 days, and then proceeds to make a bunch of poor choices. Again, it's an allegory. I understand that, but the human instinct in nature is lost.
"I know you're a cocaine w**** but I'm going to not do anything to help you fight your addiction, I'm also not going to do anything to remove you or protect you from the people repeatedly taking advantage of you." 🤦🏻

Also his writing seems to be very round, and generalized. He didn't write about them getting married. He just skipped to 7 weeks later. He didn't write about them fleeing the country. He just skipped to 4 weeks later. He's not big on the details and a lot of the details he does include are wrong.
