Publisher's Summary

Walkley Award-winning journalist Sharri Markson is the investigations editor at The Australian and host of prime-time show Sharri on Sky News Australia.

The origins of COVID-19 are shrouded in mystery. Scientists and government officials insisted, for a year and a half, that the virus had a natural origin, ridiculing anyone who dared contradict this view. Tech giants swept the internet, censoring and silencing debate in the most extreme fashion. Yet it is undeniable that a secretive facility in Wuhan was immersed in genetically manipulating bat-coronaviruses in perilous experiments. And as soon as the news of an outbreak in Wuhan leaked, the Chinese military took control and gagged all laboratory insiders.

Part-thriller, part-expose, What Really Happened in Wuhan is a groundbreaking investigation from leading journalist Sharri Markson into the origins of COVID-19, the cover-ups, the conspiracies, and the classified research. It features never-before-seen primary documents exposing China's concealment of the virus, fresh interviews with whistleblower doctors in Wuhan, and crucial eyewitness accounts that dismantle what we thought we knew about when the outbreak hit.

With unprecedented access to Washington insiders, Markson takes you inside the White House, with senior Trump lieutenants revealing firsthand accounts of fiery Oval Office clashes and new stories of compromised government advisors and censored scientists.

Bravely reported and chillingly laid out, Markson brings to light the stories of the pandemic from the people on the ground: the scientists and national security officials who raised uncomfortable truths and were labelled conspiracy theorists, until government agencies began to suspect they might have been right all along. These brave individuals persisted through bruising battles and played a crucial role in investigating the origins of COVID-19 to finally, in this book, bring us closer to the truth of what really happened in Wuhan.

Drop whatever it is that is taking up your time & focus & Read this book!

I have a library of over 2,000+ Audible recordings & this audiobook I rate, all things considered, in the top 2 or 3! It is essential reading for anyone who is following the CoViD saga… and who isn’t?

The author artfully tells a gripping narrative, naming names, places, events, dates, times and gathers them together to build precept upon precept, fact upon fact deeply involving the reader in a thoughtful, intriguing & compelling story that favors neither the blue team, nor the red team but explains & imparts so much useful information to the human team, desperate for solid enquiry and real answers in the ever evolving & mutating enigma that is CoViD19.

You must

I’ve listened to this book three times in the past two weeks. I’m amazed at the amount of work it must have taken and grateful for the effort. As a journalist it has made my own reporting better. As a human it has lit a fire to know more and do more.
Thank you, Sharri.

Compelling Reporting, But Sloppy Editing

This book is about largely circumstantial evidence on the origins of COVID. The best definition of circumstantial evidence I know of comes from an old joke about a trial in the old west of a man accused of biting off another man's ear in a bar fight. At trial, the defendant's lawyer asks: "You didn't actually see my client bite his ear off, did you?" Answer: "No, but I saw him spit it out." As the joke shows, circumstantial evidence can be compelling.

Sharri Markson, an Australian journalist, does a really thorough job of showing that COVID probably originated in a laboratory leak in Wuhan. Unfortunately, Markson's evidence is about a worldwide disaster, and is no joke. It's truly thorough reporting. It is really disappointing that no one in the U.S. has, to my knowledge, done an equally thorough job.

Markson documents the obvious point that China shut down any inquiry into the origins of COVID. That is not surprising. Why was it not reported in the U.S. that the Wuhan lab mysteriously shut down in the Fall of 2019, around the time a leak would have occurred? Why was a gag order imposed in China? Why was contemporaneous illness in China not reported/ Why was it not reported that the Chinese army took over the lab shortly thereafter?

Markson also documents the far more surprising tale--although we all witnessed it--of how supposedly mainstream scientists pushed the narrative of a natural origin almost from the get go and tried to shut down any suggestion of a lab origin as a "conspiracy theory." Why would supposedly serious scientists and medical doctors--who would hopefully have an interest in the truth--push this? Because of their involvement in either funding or collaborating with the Wuhan lab. And that includes the U.S. government.

Why would a compliant press go along with this even though there was clear evidence of a possible alternative explanation? Because Donald Trump suggested that there might have been a lab leak, and, for that reason alone, it had to be false. Almost anyone can dislike Donald Trump--he certainly gives plenty of reasons--but to dismiss a lab leak as a possibility on this flimsy basis is simply embarrassing. Donald Trump seems to send U.S. intelligence agencies into apoplexy. First, they swallow the Russia collusion narrative hook, line and sinker, and they they fail to clearly assess the origins of COVID, even suppressing efforts inside to find the truth. Of course, the press also fell for the "St. Fauci" narrative.

The most distressing thing about this book other than worldwide failure to insist on a proper investigation of the origins of COVID is the complete and utter failure of U.S. intelligence agencies. They have been manipulated by Russia, and now by China. Markson demonstrates the latter clearly.

Does anyone in the U.S. government come out of this looking good? Aside from a few lower level deputies who courageously kept digging for the truth, Mike Pompeo. Read the book and judge for yourself.

If I have a criticism of this book, it is the lack of tight editing. The book jumps around and is repetitive. It could be twenty percent shorter and even more compelling. It feels like it was rushed to publication--not surprising I guess--but a more streamlined narrative following the timeline would have been better.

Is the case for a lab leak air tight? Maybe not, but it seems the most likely explanation, and the real "conspiracy theory" was the effort of certain scientists and governmental personnel to shut it down. Their behavior bordered on disgraceful.

Everyone should read this

An astonishing story detailing minute by minute the tragic confusion and failure of global public health authorities and governments to stop the spread of COVID-19. But beyond this, the book is a comprehensive investigation of the even darker story of deliberate cover-up in China and the substantial circumstantial evidence that the outbreak originated in some way from the activities of the Wuhan Institute of Virology or other Wuhan laboratories that collected and experimented on bat coronaviruses. The coincidence of Covid-19 originating in Wuhan, a major world centre for bat coronavirus research, has always seemed difficult to explain away and this book provides details of the scientific evidence and the many risky activities that could have led to the pandemic, while remaining balanced in its conclusions. But until we see evidence of direct transmission of the virus from an animal host, not forthcoming so far, an accidental laboratory-related leak seems the most likely cause of the disaster that has caused misery to so many.

Lab Leak and CCP cover up.

Some reasons / circumstantial evidence to suggest it was a lab leak, most of which are covered in this excellent book.

1. WIV (Wuhan Institute of Virology) was reported for safety violations on multiple occasions.
2. The WIV is right in the centre of the geographic locations of the first cases in Wuhan.
3. A WIV photo actually shows a faulty fridge seal at the WIV.
4. China has had virus lab leaks in the past.
5. Lab leaks are not uncommon all over the world.
6. The 1978 UK Small Pox lab leak has much similarity to the current situation.
7. A massive spike in online readership in late 2019, relating to corona virus research.
8. Evidence of Road Blocks around the WIV in late 2019.
9. The possible Patient Zero - Huang Yan Ling. Actually worked at the WIV.
10. WIV lied about Huang Yan Ling and she is currently missing.
11. WIV staff got sick in late 2019 and were taken to hospital.
12. In Dec. 2019 and Jan. 2020, the CCP repeatedly tried to cover up the spread of the virus.
13. The CCP have repeated blocked scientific enquires made to the WIV.
14. P. Daszak lied about having “no competing interests” when claiming it was Zoonotic.
15. Feb. 2020. Daszak made bold claims it was zoonotic, well before any one had a chance to review the situation.
16. Head of WIV, Shi Zhengli at first admitted it was possible.
17. Shi Zhengli is an unstable person. She said the virus was “nature punishing the human race”
18. Shi Zhengli, told those claiming the virus may have come from her lab to “shut their stinking mouths”.
19. Researcher Yuri Deigin, provides compelling evidence of a lab made chimera structure to the virus.
20. China picked the 2021 WHO research team and Daszak was the only person from the USA allowed.
21. The WHO are corrupt and controlled by China. (See the TrustWHO documentary)
22. 66% increase in hospital car pack usage in October 2019 in Wuhan
23. The WHO origin report was delayed, suggesting serious disagreement within WHO about the contents.
24. WIV database was removed from the internet on Sept. 12, 2019, three months before the official start of the outbreak.

Reasons against a Lab Leak.
1. Previous SARS outbreaks came from host animals. However no host animal has been found to date, despite the most intense search in the history of the world.
2. Err, there aren’t any more reasons against a Lab Leak.

Yeah… if you know China well, you might not be convinced

I have studied China for over a decade, most of that time living in the country. I’m naturally very suspicious of the government and any official narrative. I am certain there was a cover up. I’m pretty sure I had Covid 19 in September 2019 whilst in China.

But using a cover up as evidence for something more nefarious is a fundamental misunderstanding of how China works. Like a compulsive liar, the CCP goes unchallenged lie after lie within its own borders. This means that they lie about everything, often unnecessarily so. As I write this a China Eastern jet has recently crashed in Guangxi and we’re seeing a very similar pattern of events unfold to the ones discussed in this book. Misinformation and controlling the narrative is something the Chinese government do… all the time. I know that even if this was a random animal borne virus that nobody could have prevented, the CCP would try to cover it up and twist the truth to avoid bad news coming out of the country.

Without this cover up as ammunition the rest of the arguments in this book are weak. Some key details are left out. The relevance of some outdated dissidents in the US overstated. It’s not conclusive by any stretch of the imagination and I finish the book still on the fence.

Media collection and independent people

Have listened to many independent sources over the last couple of years and can vouch for half of what was mentioned in this book. I personally contracted a virus around Guy Fawkes day 2019 as a frontline worker outside London and never again threw the whole of the pandemic seeing thousands per hour working near a transport hub.

If you know China, you should not be surprised.

I am just glad someone else has now outlined the almost comedic scenario: someone from the lab took an animal they used and sold it for money at what was essentially a game meat market.

If you have seen all the ways the CCP do things, and how the people under the CCP always manage to screw up, you would not be surprised.

Fascinating & Enraging

I enjoyed this book enormously. I alternated between the horror and enraged feeling toward those potentially responsible.
The book was well presented throughout and had good narrative. Points were well argued and persuasive.
The middle is slightly technical in how virus operate but still informed the lay reader.
Toward the end I did feel a little repetition but it nicely summed up the case against a natural source for the virus.

Disappointing experience

The book is referential and lengthy with many repetitions. The author does not look behind. I missed the critical analysis. The author uses a sea of quotes from different people.

This book was disappointing, especially I
think that it lacked some critical analysis on Dr. Fauci’s role.

It’s obvious the author is a journalist

Great read!

Really impressed with the narration by Danielle Carter. I'm a little picky with ebooks and their narration... speed, inflections, volume and pronunciations all really matter to me when I am listening to a story being told, and this book was well done. The story is really well executed and broken down quite well. it's definitely worth a listen or read.

A great investigation into the origins of COVID-19

This book provided an incredibly detailed investigation into the source material available surrounding the origins of COVID-19 and the ongoing investigations of international governments and organisations. It has provided a comprehensive review of the evidence and offered a factual based account of the timeline of events since the beginning of the spread of the virus. Sharri Markson is clearly a diligent journalist who has painstakingly investigated relevant sources with pertinent knowledge about the dissemination of information relating to the virus. The complex socio-political relationships between the scientific community, the media and the Chinese Communist Party where the most informative at at times alarming reports. The book highlights the responsibility for individuals to critique and analyse sources of information and question the narratives they are presented with along with the need for greater accountability for government and organisational bodies that either purposefully abuse their power or by default surmise that issue is not their problem and sweep it under the rug.
