Enjoyable Story Marred by Anachronisms
When I read series books like this one, I'm expecting a somewhat predictable experience, which is part of the comfort appeal. In the case of Weaver Street, I enjoyed the fact that the heart of story was the friendship of three very different women. Unfortunately, the author was very careless about historical research (as was her editor), resulting in some grating anachronisms. Most of these gaffes involved plugging in some popular culture features of WWII into a WWI (& 1920s) setting: Spam, "Make Do & Mend," etc--all introduced to England in the 1940s. And when one woman referred to another as "uptight," I thought I was back in the 60s (though apparently the expression was first coined in the mid-thirties by an American novelist). Am I being nit-picking? Perhaps. but with research just a keystroke away these days, errors such as these are just plain lazy, giving the impression that Ms. Welsh was phoning in a formulaic wartime novel without caring much which war. I still enjoyed aspects of the book, but had more care been taken, it would have been decidedly better.
