Resumen del Editor

Born on a farm outside Edinburgh in the mid-19th century, Agnes Watt is embraced by family, community, and tradition. Her youthful hopes and dreams are quashed but she falls in love and marries William Miller, a Gordon Highlander. Life spirals into dark places as the couple become ensnared in the nightmare that descended on the Scottish working class during the industrial revolution.

The triumphs of the great Victorian era came at an appalling human cost and Agnes fights against disease and grinding poverty. She tries to keep her family safe as tragedy stalks them in an age known in Glasgow as "the slaughter of the innocents." The friendship of other women and her unshakable belief in education strengthens her resolve. Will she endure to rise above the cruelest blow of all?

A lovey and endearing atory

My my my, what a heartfelt and beautiful book. Perfection through and through. Narration was top notch as always by Cathleen McCarron. My eyes teared up frequently as this was a story of anguish and persistence and resolution. A worthwhile and satisfying listen.

enjoyed it very much!

I loved it, and the narration was wonderful. Based on the author's great-grandmother made it even more interesting.

Marvelous

Isn’t hating to see a book end the truest indication that you loved it? Such was the case for me upon completing The White Apron. The story is lovely, the writing is both skilled and natural, and the narration of this version is perfect. This is a book I will heartily recommend and look forward to rereading again someday.

Five Star writing and narrating.

The White Apron is a lovely, and somehow comforting, story of life from the 1850's to 1900 in Scotland. The characters are struggling to survive and find meaning amongst the terrible poverty caused by the Industrial Revolution and the ruling class. The history and characters come alive with the outstanding writing and narration.

This book will brighten and enlighten your life.

The author has "given birth" to a book that deserves to be read/listened to by an extremely wide audience and especially in our times. Set in 19th century Edinburgh/Glasgow et al, a young woman faces a life and times with an indomitable attitude & spirit, in an environment that could only exist in our worst dreams. Beautifully narrated this book explores life's questions and challenges of many(all) of us, harnessing the stalwarts to carve a journey through life. Agnes is a modern day hero from a time gone by. Don't miss this classic and be charmed by Scottish culture in this wonderful book.
I can't even begin to understand the talent of Christine Eyres and I eagerly await her next book....whatever the subject!

Made Me Cry

The history was enlightening & while gut wrenching/honest, it was good to hear. The main character's resilience was inspiring...touching story! Always love Cathleen McCarron!

Felt true. Unforgettable main character.

This story sounded like it was passed down from a family member who knew the people and details. What a rich and intricate life the characters had! Even though the everyday efforts to get food and shelter were undeniably difficult, somehow the people had an honesty that does not seem to be present today. Maybe that's just my imagination. The harsh living conditions and lack of nutrition are something that we in the 21st century U.S. have not had to experience and it's quite painful to read about, but I was glad to be reminded that things are so much better in many ways than they were 100 years ago. The narration brought something very special to this story, but I am partial to C. McCarron after listening to "Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine." I'll be looking for more books by this author - she has something.

Touching story

Beautifully written and narrated story of surviving the harshest circumstances. At every turn I wished for Agnus to be happy only to see her embrace heartache after heartache. How some women find the strength to go on in such a dark life is beyond comprehension in our world of excess and indulgence. Great lesson in being grateful and finding joy and purpose in life.

Well researched and a perspective not often heard

As sad as much of the story is, it is a a heart wrenching story of the travails of women, perseverance and hope. I avoided it for months as I thought it would be too depressing but it is beautiful. The narrator is amazing.
