Publisher's summary

"Welcome to Sugarville, a mythical town in the northeast suburbs of Atlanta where the past, the present, and the future collide and residents embark on spiritual journeys to find themselves."

In the town of Sugarville, a small suburb outside Atlanta, Georgia, life couldn’t be more normal. One man schedules a doctor’s appointment, another receives a mysterious package, and another quits his job to prepare for an apocalypse that may or may not come. Ordinary events in ordinary lives, or so it would seem. With each story comes a new layer of intrigue that charms as much as it chills, each "What if?" answered to its fullest and darkest consequence.

In "God Helps Those Who Help Themselves," a devastating drought tests the limits of one man’s thirst. "The Last Known Believer" follows the Rapture as it goes not quite according to plan. J.J. Haas stuns and delights with his first collected volume of original short stories, relying on a wry wit that explores each sinister twist and turn the human spirit has to offer.

Kind of a miss for me

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a bit of a miss for me. I felt the stories were a bit boring and not well put together. Some just seemed to end abruptly which was annoying. The narration was good, but just couldn't engage me enough to enjoy the listen. I think if there was more of a theme (except for the obvious "they all happened in Sugarville" one) this would have been better for me.

Nice collection of short stories

This is a collection of short stories held together with the theme of happening in and around the made up town of sugarville. Like many short story collections, this set runs the gamut of various genres. Some are better than others, but overall a good listen.
The worst part is that some of the stories feel like they could/should have been longer. They just don't seem to hold together as a complete story.

Great collection

While I wasn’t blown away by any of these short stories I was entertained and amused by them.
There were a couple of original ideas and a few that have been done before.
Narration was good.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the publisher/author but voluntarily give my honest review.

A book of short stories

I was not really blown away by this book, but it was not terrible either. It is a bunch of disjointed stories featuring Sugarville Ga, a small town outside of Atlanta. Some of the stories really pushed to the line for me. Others were a little gross, some even made you think. If you woke up one morning and there was no water left, what would you do, how would you act? This was just one story. The book did not have a theme for the stories, they were from all corners of the weird spectrum. The book was entertaining and a good way to kill a few hours. J J Hass both wrote and narrated the book.

Not A Fan

I got this ARC via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. There were many dark and twisted stories in this collection. Some ended so abruptly that I was left waiting for the next chapter and it had moved on to the next story. Some of the stories call for a strong stomach. This is a collection of disjointed stories that took place in Sugarville. The narrator though was perfect for the stories. He brought the emotions of each story to the forefront. Due to the disjointed nature of the stories I am not a fan. But if you want to listen to several short stories then this is for you.

Engrossing!

Welcome to Sugarville is an intriguing listen! The author is also the narrator. Where JJ Haas has a nice voice and narrated at a good pace, he didn't really give the characters their own voices. I think having someone else narrate would've been a much better choice and would have enhanced the listening experience. All in all though, this is an excellent book and I would recommend it to my friends.

Twilight Zone in Georgia

Welcome to Sugarville took me down a different path than I usually follow - for reading and genre prospects. JJ Haas creates a few short stories that take place, in what seems to be, a mundane little town in Georgia. However, each story and situation veers into the supernatural, even macabre in some. As I stated, these stories are not my normal choice, but they are well written and for those who like stories that are mysterious, thrilling with bizarre twists to the supernatural, I believe they would be an excellent choice. The narration was done well and worked for these type of stories. I was given this book, at my request, in exchange for an honest review.

Maybe not for me

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. I guess I prefer longer stories. I’m afraid I did not find the stories overly exciting or memorable yet there was imagination and I was intrigued . Many of them seem to end abruptly. Each had an original storyline and some a little twisted, so I would be interested to see what a novel by this author would be like.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator and he did an okay job narrating. There is a bit of a lack of emotion to his reading. I don’t know if this was influenced by the short stories. I would listen to another to see if he does better on another book. He did have different voices for the characters in the stories.

There are no explicit sex scenes or excessive violence. There was swearing.
