When army officer Chike Ameobi is ordered to kill innocent civilians, he knows it is time to desert his post. As he travels toward Lagos with Yemi, his junior officer, and into the heart of a political scandal involving Nigeria's education minister, Chike becomes the leader of a new platoon, a band of runaways who share his desire for a different kind of life. Among them is Fineboy, a fighter with a rebel group, desperate to pursue his dream of becoming a radio DJ; Isoken, a 16-year-old girl whose father is thought to have been killed by rebels; and the beautiful Oma, escaping a wealthy, abusive husband.

Full of humor and heart, Welcome to Lagos is a high-spirited novel about aspirations and escape, innocence and corruption. It offers a provocative portrait of contemporary Nigeria that marks the arrival in the United States of an extraordinary young writer.

This text paints non-fictional events that occurred in Nigeria on a fictional canvas! Well read!

Amazing read.

Recommended for those who enjoy long thorough literary fiction story!

Beautiful written with Nigerian culture scatter throughout novel.

Narrator was not right fit for story. Different voices by another narrator for each character would have made audible “pop” !

A very interesting story. Would have been better narrated if each of the main characters had different narrators. The names (exception Fineboy) made it hard to determine who was being referred to (unless you repeated that section in the chapter. Overall: good

Interesting!!

I didn’t expect it to be such a good trilling book.
It did keep me in suspense until the end.

A motley crew of characters send their way through the obstacles and discoveries of Lagos in this sophomore novel from Chibundu Onuzo. Three men escaping their various roles in propagating the violence in the Niger Delta, a girl separated from her parents, and a woman on the run from her rich but abusive husband all come together en route to the city, where they get embroiled in politics thanks to embezzling political minister and wealthy newspaper man.

The story is fast-paced, well-narrated, and brings each character alive. While sometimes the plot feels a bit forced - and the end feels a bit unsatisfactory - the magic is in Onuzo’s ability to breathe life into each of these characters, so that we root for their success even when it all seems unrealistically out of reach.

Lagos in the Style of Dickens

While the ending seems like Kings got away with continuing fraud, it’s very realistic because not everyone gets caught, unfortunately. I like that the story has so many details that mimic real life, the neighbor who took the father to the hospital still living in the same place years after, the hospital requesting them to buy supplies that should be provided, family members judging him but also wanting things from him, the classism among Nigerians, those who are educated thinking they’re better than the uneducated people living around them despite them going through the same struggles of poverty and His girlfriend leaving him to marry a rich man, to name a few. If anything shocked me in this book, it was how easily uncle Boni died but even that made sense, I enjoyed the book mostly because the narrator spoke like an igbo person and used the correct intonation to pronounce words, it added to the visualization and made everything feel more real.

The story is very realistic - some spoilers

As much as I wanted to give this book a chance, It was difficult to listen to. I didn’t enjoy listening to the narrator at all and couldn’t get past this to the story itself. And this review is after trying several times. Too bad. Credit wasted.

Difficult to listen to

This audio book does the novel a huge disservice- the accent of the narrator is just awful and unbearable to listen to. What a shame!
