In this striking novel about an unforgettable childhood, four Nigerian brothers encounter a madman whose mystic prophecy of violence threatens the core of their close-knit family

Told by nine-year-old Benjamin, the youngest of four brothers, The Fishermen is the Cain and Abel-esque story of a childhood in Nigeria, in the small town of Akure. When their father has to travel to a distant city for work, the brothers take advantage of his absence to skip school and go fishing. At the forbidden nearby river, they meet a madman who persuades the oldest of the boys that he is destined to be killed by one of his siblings. What happens next is an almost mythic event whose impact-both tragic and redemptive-will transcend the lives and imaginations of the book's characters and readers.

Dazzling and viscerally powerful, The Fisherman is an essential novel about Africa, seen through the prism of one family's destiny.

Chapter after chapter, this story left little but deep incisions in my heart, but in the same spot, so that the wound got deeper and more painful as I listened on.

Until the last chapter when, emotionally battered, physically tired and needing to lie down to continue, ChigoIe mercifully let my bloodied heart start to heal.

This one touched my soul.

I'm grateful it's fiction

I couldn’t stop listening. The reader is fantastic. He brought the characters to life for me. The author describes scenarios so amazingly. If you like a straight forward story, the way this one is told might be frustrating but I think it’s what made it such a great project of literature. The story took so many twists and turns that left me gasping trying to figure out how I didn’t see things coming. You learn so much about African culture. I look forward to listening to his other book.

For some reason I wasn't grabbed at first, but kept on because I had heard great things, and had loved Orchestra of Minorities. Not long in, I found myself compelled to continue by Obioma's deceivingly simple narrative and masterful storytelling rhythm. The novel is devastating and poignant. The narration is superb.
