In November 1965, some 450 men of the First Battalion, Seventh Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion was chopped to pieces. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constituted one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War. How these men persevered - sacrificed themselves for their comrades and never gave up - makes a vivid portrait of war at its most inspiring and devastating.

General Moore and Joseph Galloway, the only journalist on the ground throughout the fighting, have interviewed hundreds of men who fought there, including the North Vietnamese commanders. This devastating account rises above the specific ordeal it chronicles to present a picture of men facing the ultimate challenge, dealing with it in ways they would have found unimaginable only a few hours earlier. It reveals to us, as rarely before, man's most heroic and horrendous endeavor.

The movie was good but only tells half the story. This book is about the brave men that fought in the opening battles of Vietnam. With each passing day, more and more of our history is forgotten. I'm so grateful for those that have recorded it and are willing to pass it on to future generations. May God Bless you all!

Quite possibly the best book I've ever listened to

I read a lot of history, especially accounts dealing with war. This book was on the Commandant's reading list so I felt compelled to give it a try. It parallels what "With the Old Breed on Peleliu" did for WWII; it brought an incredible story to life in vivid detail to be preserved for future generations to learn from. These books give one a worthwhile account of what the battle was like. I especially liked that it also presents the battle from the enemy's view of the map and how they interpreted the fighting as it unfolded through the fog of war.

Best Vietnam Biography out there

This amazing true story opens our eyes to the awful truth of war and it’s far reaching affect not only to the surviving military members but to the families of the dead. I am a veteran but my ear pails in comparison to those before me. I can never thank these men and women enough. I will never be able to tell the families of those who served in this war how incredibly thankful I am for their sacrifice. May God bless you all. Thank you.

The best book to come out about the Vietnam War, nor none. I was one of the lucky ones. I was in the Navy off the coast and this was very emotional to read. Several of my classmates were killed in Vietnam.

Not a book of the glory of battle, this book details how it effects the men thrust into it. Hard story for anyone that’s been to war to hear but necessary.

Epic story of courage.

Obviously the story is amazing and told in depth and with passion, however the narrator makes simple mistakes in the pronouncing of “mobile” (as in infantry) into “mobeel” and “maestro” into “my-estro” — just weird. Luckily he only says those words a few times.

A gripping tale of heroism
