Publisher's summary

Some towns die of old age, corruption from within, or invasion from without, but it is a special secret sauce of these poisons that have brought on the long slow death of the New England port of New Harbor. For the citizens who remain, the physical and social decay is a fact of life they’ve learned to live with like rats in the ruins. To them, the notion of civic order and pride is a bad joke, but one they choose to laugh at rather than cry over.

It takes a special kind of private detective to work this town, and Alex B. Hynde is just that kind of dick. Al knows his town and how to play the game. He knows a bad joke needs a jester, and he’s happy to play the role and tell the tale—until he meets Randi Barnes, and things get a little out of hand.

Great adventure

A very original murder mystery which has the seedy noir flavor of the best detective novels of the forties.
An anti-hero narrates the rollicking scary adventure that takes over his life and bounces him from one unusual gang to another, all of whom are trying to find or keep a mysterious file. Satire and humor underlie the battle between the tough guys and a corrupt group of governing leaders. The intrigue is often farcical anf laughable. A great listen.
