In the summer of 1922, young Joe Wilson is a gardener at a wealthy family's estate. When the chauffeur falsely accuses Joe of a misdeed and attacks him, Joe injures the chauffeur in self-defense. Knowing the law will be after him, Joe skips town and heads to Detroit, Michigan where his cousin lives.

It's the Roaring Twenties, and Detroit is an exciting place. The automobile industry is booming, people are flooding into the city to work in the busy factories, fortunes are being made, and alcohol Prohibition is the law of the land. With quality booze available just across the river in Canada, Detroit is a bootlegger's paradise.

Joe finds a factory job and is soon at odds with the thieving foreman who is stealing from the workers and the factory owner. When Joe discovers the fraud, he tells the owner's daughter, which sets off a chain of events that rapidly spin out of control. Joe and those around him are soon dragged into the seamy world of criminals, corruption, and illegal booze.

Joe's journey takes him through Detroit's busy factories to the garage of one of America's richest families, a car-design studio in the early days of auto-styling, and to the brink of success. Along the way, he dodges vicious bootleggers, dirty cops, and a sleazy banker.

Captivating Historical Crime & Life in 1920s

Joe Wilson relocates to Detroit, Michigan, seeking refuge from trouble in Ohio. He starts a new life as an auto worker, gardener, husband, and soon-to-be-father. However, his luck takes a turn for the worse when he unexpectedly becomes the owner of 100 cases of illegal alcohol. Relentless crooked cops, bankers, and thugs are on the hunt for it during the prohibition era, and Joe's problems continue to escalate.

Thomas E. Hall, the author skillfully presents a historically accurate portrayal of life in 1920s Detroit, Michigan, reflecting both the time period's attitudes and their enduring relevance today. The narrative flows smoothly, and the characters are well-developed. His plot twists are unexpected and engage the listener with the characters. I found myself holding my breath each time Joe and his friend encountered R & S (deadly, murderous thugs) as well as Landers and Horn.

The narrator, Ed Romano, was perfect for this audiobook. His seamless transitions between accents and his delivery, mirroring the characters' actions and situations, were flawless. I found his voice to be easy to hear and enjoy.

Hall's ability to engage the listener becomes evident as soon as you start this magnificent and captivating story, enhanced by Romano's performance. It's a truly enjoyable experience!
