Publisher's Summary

Bored and fed up with life, staring down a 50th birthday, Mike Tyler was looking for a change. Life had become routinized and unexciting. Maybe it was a mid-life crisis, or maybe just a yearning for one last big adventure. Mike decides to try hiking from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail, just to see what happens.

Mike convinces his wife, Margo, to join him. Together, they embark on a five-month hike full of anticipation. They hike through some of the most stunning and remote places in the country on a trail full of unique, offbeat characters. But the trail had even more to offer than either of them had anticipated.

Very fluffy

I chose this book because it had been rated rather highly. This book seems like it was written from reading other books about the PCT. The text rather glibly summarized their experience and did not provide much detail. Lot’s of their California experience because that is where the author is from a lot less of Oregon and very little of Washington. If I were considering hiking PCT this book makes it appear such an easy feat.

Narrator's voice

The narrator's voice tones just don't go well with the story. It's not that he has a voice that's irritating it just doesn't fit this type of story. He would do better doing children's books or something. It could have been longer, but overall I enjoyed the context.

Nothing special

I have listened to many books about hiking on the PCT. This book was like so many others. I wish there had been more description of the action. This was the summer of many fires in the area. There could have been so much more to tell. I did enjoy the description of the snake encounters. The rhythm of the sentences became repetitive, especially during conversations. These issues, combined with the narrator's rate of speech and lack of emotion, caused me to want to stop listening. Like all through-hikers, though, I wanted to get to Canada. I did.

Very simple

While I admire and applaud this couple's strength and amazing ability to tackle the PCT, the written story of their trek is simple and often repetitive in places. It almost seems as if it was written for pre-teens.

well written.

loved this book... the narrator's voice was soothing also!! it kinda shows that if you take politics, and finances away from a couple for 5 months, it makes em stronger... maybe the court system should do this to couples that want a divorce first!

great story for interest in hiking

The story itself was great. didn't care for the narrator. I don't mind a single narrator just didn't care for the way the story was read

Somewhat disappointed

I’m not sure if it was the tone of the writing or the reader’s voice, but so many times I felt like I was listening to immature and whining conversations. Often the author made rash descriptions or judgments ... thankfully he included the fact that he DID later evolve his thinking, but it felt so awkward in between. I can’t quite put my finger in it. The story was certainly valuable enough to hear to the end, but it was frustrating to listen to. Now I’m wondering if this would have been better to read rather than listen. (?)

A conversational book

I finished but I got super tired of the simple dialogue. Do they really talk like that in real life? Margot said” gee I’m really hungry”. Author said “ wow! I’m hungry too.... let’s eat”. The whole book is like this. If your looking for a good PCT book read “Thirst” or “Thru hiking will break your heart”.

Disappointing

The content isn’t great but more irritating is the narration. The reader has a great voice but his style is that of a school teacher reading a story to a group of 5 year olds. The style of writing just adds to this. Not a valuable listen to any budding thru hikers.

happy

I enjoyed your journey. I'm afraid the rattle snakes and bears would be to much for me
