Publisher's summary

Sometimes love needs a few wagers to stick the second time around.

Pleasure is his only pursuit....

Colin Rowley, Viscount Hartsford, has been given an offer too good to ignore: If he comes home to Lancaster Hall and his family by Christmas morning, he’ll win a coveted racehorse as well as an estate. Trouble is, recollections attached to his ducal father’s castle leave him haunted, especially those regarding the first girl he’s ever loved, the one who rejected him.

Faced with reduced circumstances...

Widow Lucy Ashbrook is leaving London for the last time. Now that her husband’s savings have dried up, she can no longer afford her lifestyle, so after she attends the Christmas house party at Lancaster Hall - the site of so many delicious memories - she’ll return to her parents on the neighboring property. Too bad the man who first won her heart, and who accompanies her on the journey to Derbyshire, hasn’t changed his selfish ways.

The magic of the holiday season...

When a series of mysterious events continually throw Colin and Lucy together, they can’t help but revisit the past, and rediscover the joy made during those long-ago winters. Happiness will elude them both unless they find the Yuletide wonder and give themselves over to a love that has waited...with the help of a few secret Christmas wagers working behind the scenes.

Poor Colin

The audiobook is not too long and is a stand-alone, so those are both pluses. I usually listen at 1.25x, and this one sounded fine that way.

Unfortunately, Colin was told by the woman he loved that he wasn’t good enough for her and spent 17 years believing it. She went on to marry his best friend instead, compounding the betrayal.

Running into her, now a widow, on the way home to his family for Christmas, Colin continues to suffer from her doubts and barbs through the journey, but somehow that all transforms into a second chance for Colin and Lucy. I would have dumped her along the way.

Lucy ia a know it all who knew nothing

I never liked Lucy's character. She was too judgemental towards Colin and abrasive and shrewish. Colin wanted time to provide a good life for Lucy. but she was too impatient for the right now and married Colin's bff. NO!!! Lucy constantly thought the worst of Colin. In the end. Colin was too generous and caring for harpy Lucy. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this story and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job.

Touching story

This story surprised me in that it ended up being much deeper and more moving than many of the typical Christmas Regency romances, where often there are rather contrived obstacles to the HEA, or too much dithering on the part of the H and h. But this story, even though not long, had more depth to the characters, and some actual great revelations, especially on the part of the heroine, that made it a quite moving story of second chances, I was very pleased with Megan Green's narration- she has a unique enunciation that I found quite pleasing.

Christmas journey heals old wounds

This holiday story was a second chance romance and it featured an interesting twist. The narrator Megan Green did a really good job with the story and with differentiating the characters.

Widowers Colin Rowley, the Viscount Hartsford and Lucy Ashbrook used to be sweethearts. They broke up and married other people, but both are now single with children. Thanks to a series of events, they are both en route back to the Lancaster Hall, which was where Lucy turned down Colin's proposal of marriage. The journey allowed the two to take stroll down memory lane and re-evaluate some of their behaviors back in the day. They got a chance to make a matured choices and do it right this time.

I really like Colin's evolution as he seemed be aware of his shortcomings but needed some support to navigate his melancholy behavior. Lucy's character was wishy-washy to me and I really feel like while she may have had residual feeling for Colin, she needed a husband with money. So I didn't trust her memories of Colin because one moment she loved him, then the next minute she thought he was selfish beyond all reason. She was the one I didn't connect with in this narrative. I do see that she was good for Colin.

I was satisfied with the ending though I will admit that this story dragged a bit. IT was definitely a good story about how the holiday spirit can heal old wounds.

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own thoughts and feelings.
