Publisher's Summary

Sometimes love needs a few wagers to stick the second time around.

Pleasure is his only pursuit....

Colin Rowley, Viscount Hartsford, has been given an offer too good to ignore: If he comes home to Lancaster Hall and his family by Christmas morning, he’ll win a coveted racehorse as well as an estate. Trouble is, recollections attached to his ducal father’s castle leave him haunted, especially those regarding the first girl he’s ever loved, the one who rejected him.

Faced with reduced circumstances...

Widow Lucy Ashbrook is leaving London for the last time. Now that her husband’s savings have dried up, she can no longer afford her lifestyle, so after she attends the Christmas house party at Lancaster Hall - the site of so many delicious memories - she’ll return to her parents on the neighboring property. Too bad the man who first won her heart, and who accompanies her on the journey to Derbyshire, hasn’t changed his selfish ways.

The magic of the holiday season...

When a series of mysterious events continually throw Colin and Lucy together, they can’t help but revisit the past, and rediscover the joy made during those long-ago winters. Happiness will elude them both unless they find the Yuletide wonder and give themselves over to a love that has waited...with the help of a few secret Christmas wagers working behind the scenes.

Characters without charisma or witty dialogue

I generally love Regency romances, but this one fell flat for me. It is a 5.5-hour-long second-chance Regency romance set during the Christmas season. The third person perspective alternates between the two primary characters, Lucy and Collin. When she was 18 and he was 21, their relationship failed at Christmas. Now, 17 years later, after each of their first spouses have died, they get accidentally reunited during the holidays. Can the heartache from the past be transformed into new love?

This audiobook did have several good things going for it. First, the plot was realistic enough for a Regency romance, and secrets were properly divulged slowly. The mode of speaking sounded historically authentic, and the cultural details seemed well researched. The author really tried to infuse the magic of Christmas into the story. There were lots of quaint Christmas traditions. In addition, the narrator Megan Green did a pretty good job. She has a pleasant tone of voice and lovely English accent. She differentiated the various character voices well. I noticed only one mispronounced word (“emulate”), so the narrator is accomplished in Regency-era vocabulary.

However, a few parts of the audiobook did not meet my hopeful expectations for a charming Regency romance. First, the dull characters could not keep my interest. Lucy and Collin had no charisma and no witty nor funny dialogue. I certainly didn’t laugh during the story. I really tried to like this story, but I struggled to finish it. I really couldn’t care less if Lucy and Collin finally got together or not. I suppose that I just don’t like this new-to-me author's writing style, but other people will probably like it.

Lucy ia a know it all who knew nothing

I never liked Lucy's character. She was too judgemental towards Colin and abrasive and shrewish. Colin wanted time to provide a good life for Lucy. but she was too impatient for the right now and married Colin's bff. NO!!! Lucy constantly thought the worst of Colin. In the end. Colin was too generous and caring for harpy Lucy. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this story and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job.

Who doesn't love a second chance romance

Pretty good second chance romance. Our couple was in love since their teens but lack of communication and immaturity separated them. Both made their lives, married, had kids and became widows. Chance brings them together during the Holiday season and they discover that there are still strong feelings between them. It was nice and sweet. I really like the second chance part. I did find that the character of our hero’s daughter acted much more mature than the actual age and that the heroine’s kids are mentioned very little.

The narrator is good as well and does the appropriate English accent. She also made distinct voices for the different characters.

Sweet story

Such a sweet story. I enjoy stories from the past where formality and manners was still practiced. Performance was good for the time period the book was written.

3.5 Stars for the story

This was my first book to read/listen to by Sandra Sookoo. I enjoyed the story. I don't often read Regency, but enjoy the change when I do so. This was spicy, sweet read with a great second chance romance. Colin's daughter seemed older than her age and it's too bad we didn't get to know Lucy's children better. This was more romance than Christmas. Sweet HEA!!

Megan Green was a good narrator. She performed well!

Sweet holiday story

This was a sweet second chance love story set in the late 1800's set near Christmas. It took a few chapters to get to like the characters, which helped the story immensely. I liked the addition of the teenaged children, and thought they helped the storyline. The narrator took a while for me to get used to, but after a few chapters, she seemed fitting for the story. Definitely a sweet read to start the holiday season!

Christmas journey heals old wounds

This holiday story was a second chance romance and it featured an interesting twist. The narrator Megan Green did a really good job with the story and with differentiating the characters.

Widowers Colin Rowley, the Viscount Hartsford and Lucy Ashbrook used to be sweethearts. They broke up and married other people, but both are now single with children. Thanks to a series of events, they are both en route back to the Lancaster Hall, which was where Lucy turned down Colin's proposal of marriage. The journey allowed the two to take stroll down memory lane and re-evaluate some of their behaviors back in the day. They got a chance to make a matured choices and do it right this time.

I really like Colin's evolution as he seemed be aware of his shortcomings but needed some support to navigate his melancholy behavior. Lucy's character was wishy-washy to me and I really feel like while she may have had residual feeling for Colin, she needed a husband with money. So I didn't trust her memories of Colin because one moment she loved him, then the next minute she thought he was selfish beyond all reason. She was the one I didn't connect with in this narrative. I do see that she was good for Colin.

I was satisfied with the ending though I will admit that this story dragged a bit. IT was definitely a good story about how the holiday spirit can heal old wounds.

I received this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own thoughts and feelings.

A sweet second change romance

With all the snow as of late, a Christmas story was just what I needed. It made me think of a Hallmark movie. It was well written, but some parts definitely leaned on the holiday spirit. For example his change of countenance came a little quicker than I’d have expected, but the holiday activities affected it. Overall it was a sweet read and the narrator had a nice gentle voice to fit the tone of the story! I’d listen to something of hers again- author and narrator. I suggest checking it out if you need a sweet Christmas listen.

a second chance romance

I loved this second chance romance. Colin and Lucy were once lovers, but as fate would have it, it was not their time. Now as they return to the place it all began, they have a second chance. Each of them having kids and past marriages brings some baggage, but these two belong together. Fate seems to want them together as a series of events keeps throwing them together. This was a heart warming story. I found myself wanting them together from the beginning. Colin seems to have matured, and that adds depth to this second chance. SO many tugs at my heartstrings kept me captivated by this story.

Megan Green did a great job narrating this story. She has an easy to listen to voice. Ms. Green was able to keep the characters distinct and easy to follow. I felt as if I was a part of this story as Megan Green brought it to life.

Sweet heartwarming holiday novel

I haven’t read a historical romance in a long time, and I’ve rarely listened to one. I’m glad I started again with this one. I enjoyed listening so much. The story was heartwarming, the characters stood out, and the narration was done really well. Awesome.
