Following fifteen Marines from Pearl Harbor, through their battles with the Japanese, to their return home after V-J Day, Adam Makos and Marcus Brotherton have compiled an oral history of the Pacific War in the words of the men who fought on the front lines. With vivid, unforgettable detail, these Marines reveal harrowing accounts of combat with an implacable enemy, the camaraderie they found, the friends they lost, and the aftermath of the war's impact on their lives.
With unprecedented access to the veterans and unpublished memoirs, Voices of the Pacific presents true stories of heroism as told by such World War II veterans as Sid Phillips, R.V. Burgin, and Chuck Tatum—whose exploits were featured in the classic HBO miniseries The Pacific—and their Marine buddies from the legendary 1st Marine Division.

Fortunately an author convinced a Pacific Theater World War 2 Marine that the stories of their buddies who did not make it needed to be told.
Finally those stories are being composed to memorialize the sacrifices of a global war effort in the modern age, which lessons learned may be applied to find resolutions and alternatives to war.
Nonetheless, the veterans and service men who gave their all is remembered in this written work.
Though a bit flat in its reading, the power of story prevails in this audiobook, and I recommend it.

One of the best books I have ever read

I used to have to travel across my state once a month (about 400 miles and 5 and half hours of travel time) and these books made me not want to stop driving. Great telling of the pacific theater and I will probably listen 5 more times.
Best Historical Novel

The so-called 'jumping around with different names' can be understood if you think of this as a bunch of veterans sitting around talking about their experiences. Obviously, you can't see who's talking, so before each person shares their story, their name is read off. Each veteran tells their story about that particular time on that particular island. If you think of it like that, its very easy to keep everything tied together.
What I personally find most appealing about this book is the fact it adds to, or ties together so much of what I've already watched and read.
My own father served on Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima, but never talked about his experience. Over the years I've spent a lot of time absorbing everything I can find about the Pacific Theater, and this book fills in some holes to what I already know and even adds new information I didn't have.
If you watched the mini-series 'The Pacific' and/or read Eugene Sledge's book 'With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa' you'll immediately recognize the battles these veterans talk about.
