How should a woman feel, when she only what a gentleman to open the car door for her, take her out to dinner, maybe some flowers, or a box of chocolates, or just a simple walk in the park. And yet you are told to stop looking through the world with rose-colored glasses. That kind of man doesn’t exist anymore. Times have changed.

Anthony, her ten-year son, sees this, and wants better for his mother and brother. To cope with what he sees around him, He tells the story of his family through his journal. He knows what his mother desires, and the love he has for his brother Michael.

It is an intriguing, enchanting, heart-felt story told through the eyes of a ten-year-old. It is a must-listen story that will melt any captivating heart, leaving you with a moment of reminiscing, hope with a warm smile.

Violins and Chocolate by Clark Mitchell Long is an absolute gem. I truly hope one day I get to watch this beautiful story unfold on film. This book captures the heart and rhythm of an ordinary American family in the 1960s, yet the journey is anything but ordinary. It’s layered with all the real-life complexities we know so well: finishing school, chasing dreams, starting a business, navigating gender identity and acceptance, relationships tested by cheating and temptation, divorce, illness, loss, and the challenges of blending a family.

What I loved most is how each plot line unfolds with such honesty and heart. The characters felt real, their struggles familiar, and their triumphs deeply satisfying. Anthony was especially memorable to me. His journal entries about the events of the time made the story feel grounded and vivid, adding a thoughtful and emotional layer to the narrative.

I listened to the audiobook version, and it became the highlight of my day. I looked forward to that hour with these characters, eager to reenter their world. The narrator, Mr. Cash, delivered a perfect performance with a voice that fit the tone and emotion of the story effortlessly.

Violins and Chocolate is warm, engaging, and rich with life’s joys and heartbreaks. If you enjoy slice-of-life stories that feel honest, heartfelt, and beautifully human, this one deserves a spot in your library. Five stars from me.
