The Mountain Man books are one of today's most popular Western series. USA Today best-selling author William Johnstone packs each adventure with plenty of action and danger. Rancher Smoke Jensen hoped he was through with Sundance years ago when he shot the the gunslinger's ear off. But now Sundance has gathered a bloodthirsty gang and is headed for Smoke's spread.©1997 William W. Johnstone (P)2003 Recorded Books Ficción Género Ficción Westerns

Another great book about Smoke. In this book one of Smoke's past enemy's is coming to get even. This book shows how much Smoke's hometown stands behind him. There is plenty of action and adventure in it. Also Cal and Pearly goes to help Smoke and you hear from some old mountain man. This is a five star book worth listening to a second and third time. Jack Garrett does A good job narrating this book. if my review is any help will you please click on the helpful link below. Thank you

Would you listen to Vengeance of the Mountain Man again? Why?

yes

What does Jack Garrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

character and style. I have heard others on western audiobooks and Jack is the best I think

Sugarloaf

The cowboys didn’t use cuss words, not a great idea to bring 2021 vulgar words int the 1800’s West. It’s distracting from the storyline.

Don’t need the cuss words

I enjoy these stories but for pity sake, quit changing the history of how things happened and quit using the other books as filler material.

Good grief, do some research

There hasn't been all but one book that I haven't enjoyed and this was another good one. I like that Smoke us the last mountain man and that the older mountain man cone to his aid when the need arises.

You don't mess with Smoke Jensen!

this story seemed more violent and bloody than other stories I have enjoyed. I didn't care for the sexual violence and the end of the book had more bloody violence than I care to picture in my head.

Bloody is this one

I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have others in this series. Not all were narrated as beautifully as this one. Listening to him, and his ability to create distinct voices in character is such a talent. Or should I say skill. At any rate, he does bring this book to life.

this book is very descriptive on The kills. if you don't want to hear how everybody dies then you don't need to read this.

It seems that Smoke Jensen, the owner of the Sugar Loaf ranch outside of Big Rock Kansas, had someone in Texas that wanted him dead. The first four to reach his ranch land had tried, but failed. Before the gun fire started, Smoke said to the leader, "he thought a man should know why someone wanted him dead". The gunslinger told him " he had insulted man a in Texas and they were being paid to kill him". Instantly one of the men went for his gun. After the smoke cleared, three were dead and one threw up his hands. Smoke was going to kill him too, but the young man talked Smoke out of it. Smoke inquired who he was. He said his name was George Hampton. He knew the boy was scared and since he was young, Smoke thought, maybe had learned a lesson, so he told him " I had never killed a unarmed man in my life and there is no reason to change now. Smoke turn and walked away. Cal a youngster Smoke had with him told Hampton to get on his horse and get". The cowboy mounted his horse and wasted no time complying. Little did Smoke know, it wouldn't be the last time he would see this man.
Smoke later learned the man that wanted him dead, was named Lester Morgan, but went by the name of Sundance, when he had encountered him in Big Rock. Morgan's a young man and went by Sundance many years ago. Smoke saw him shoot a well known fast draw outlaw, Luke Nations in the back leaving the saloon in Big Rock. Smoke met him outside, put him to the ground, but didn't kill him.
He asked him why he shot Nations ? Sundance said "he wanted to be known as the man who killed the fastest gunslinger in the West, thus making him famous and feared by all". Smoke had once been a friend of Luke's and he was angry. He said "you want to be known as a fast draw?" Smoke shot his left ear off, and told him "now you will be known to all as the back shooter of Luke Nations wherever you go". Sundance never admitted he shot Nations in the back, but told everyone he beat him in a gunfight. Smoke had marked him for life and now it was payback time, for he had been unable to settle long in one place, had to keep moving, living in the run since he high failed it out of town. His life had been miserable and he wanted Smoke dead!

Everyone he had sent after Smoke failed to succeed, he realized he had to do it himself. He had to come up with a plan and hit the trail for the long trip to Smokes spread. Little did he know what he was riding into.

I have been a fan of the Johnston Brother's Western adventures for awhile and never been disappointed with his accounts of the Old West. He keeps me entertained with stories that include a lot of action, outlaws, gun fights
and etc. I imagine that was the way the eighteen hundreds were out West. There has never been a dull second in his stories.

Jack Garrett is one of the best Narrators to listen to for Western action, for he has a deep voice which complements the Johnstone Brother's stories.

Not recommended for children, truly for the mature, due to the violence and language.

On to another. As long as the Johnston Brother's write Western's, I will read or listen to them.
