Publisher's summary

Book four in the New York Times best-selling Rose Gardner Investigations series.

Rose Gardner feels like she’s up a creek without a paddle. Her sister is dying, her secret boyfriend, James Malcolm, is struggling to protect the county underworld from an upstart drug dealer, and her ex has moved back to town with a bee in his bonnet and a mission to root out corruption in the county. To make matters worse, Neely Kate is in dire straits, too - the past she’s spent years trying to forget has finally caught up to her, with horrific fallout. They’re in the thick of danger, and everyone’s quick to tell them they’d do best to hunker down and keep to themselves.

But mysteries have a way of finding Rose and Neely Kate. A mother contacts them about finding her missing teenage daughter the same day they find a different young woman stranded by the side of the road. They know they should turn down the case, just as they should ignore the signs that the woman with the broken down car is running from something, but for Rose and Neely Kate, curiosity will always have a stronger call than danger.

Another wonderful Rose story

I love the audio books and Shannon McManus' narration of Denise Grover Swank's books about Rose Gardner. Rose has so much going on in her life with her sister dying of cancer plus solving her investigations, and her Lady in Black. Things are sure getting sticky for Rose with her connections with James and the crime world. I hope I can wait for the next audio version of the series. Denise really knows how to bring out the emotions in her books.

More mysteries and more drama

I loved this latest installment of Rose trying unsuccessfully to live her life drama free. Despite her attempts to not be, Rose is always smack dab in the middle of mystery, hilarious messes, danger, and love life drama. Rose is a woman living in a nosy closed minded small southern town. She is good hearted and experiences visions that she’s compelled to share with the person she has them of. Rose and her best friend Neely Kate are apprenticing with a local PI so they can become PIs in two years. In this book they are trying to find a missing young woman from a neighboring town. In between following the clues, Rose continues to deal with Violet’s impending death, whether to continue to date James, her role in the county as Lady, and to add to her full plate, she’s befriended Carly, a woman running from her own mess. James, Jed, Joe, Violet, and Witt are major secondary characters as the drama unfolds. The book was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters, and an engaging storyline as shown through sweet moments, spice, exciting action, danger, family drama, painful pasts, mystery, plot twists, imperfect characters, missteps, and all the big feels. I cannot wait to read what happens next in Rose’s life. 4.5 stars.

Shannon McManus once again did a great job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly.
