Inspired by a terrifying true story, a heart-pounding novel of suspense about a small Minnesota town where nothing is as quiet - or as safe - as it seems.

Cassie McDowell’s life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents’ strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she’s grown accustomed to them.

All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale.

One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed - violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who’s responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface. Then Cassie’s own sister undergoes the dark change. If she is to survive, Cassie must find her way in an adult world where every sin is justified, and only the truth is unforgivable.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Part suspense, part coming-of-age, Jess Lourey’s Unspeakable Things is a story of creeping dread, about childhood when you know the monster under your bed is real. A novel that clings to you long after the last page."--Lori Rader-Day, Edgar Award-nominated author of Under a Dark Sky

Editor's Pick

Unspeakable crimes, unpauseable suspense
"Accomplished author Jess Lourey drew on one of her childhood’s defining memories—the famous abduction of 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling in Paynesville, Minnesota—to craft this intensely suspenseful and haunting novel. Told from the perspective of 12-year-old Cassie McDowell, it starts as a coming-of-age tale set in the 1980s—think Trapper Keepers, Pac-Man, and references to "Chester the Molester." But as that last one suggests, the dread creeps in fast. Something isn’t right in the McDowell family…or their town, where boys start to disappear and then return, their changed demeanors hinting at shocking trauma. Lourey is a master at building unrelenting suspense, and prolific narrator Caitlin Kelly delivers an excellent portrayal of Cassie’s ordeal—and the process by which an entire community comes to terms with its deep, collective grief."

I was starting to get bored after the first few chapters but decided to continue, hoping I won’t get disappointed. Just as the author was building up the story, I hear the music signaling the story’s end and I’m, “Whaaat?!”
I read in one of the comments that there was an epilogue so I checked it out. It should have been included in the story.

Epilogue should’ve been part of the story

This is a coming of age tale about a little girl, not a mystery in any way. Great coming of age tale, super disappointed because I thought it would be a mystery. Exchanged the book.

NOT A MYSTERY

I felt like it was a young adult read. So much detail was left out and the end was cut short and gave no closure at all.

Was not horrible and kept my interest just wasn’t fantastic

It’s okay

The book was good but not really gripping. It held my interest but fell a little flat. it was a nice coming of age novel and is definitely worth the listen.

The perspective is from a 13-year-old girl, her thoughts and fears when boys disappear and come home different, until they don't.

This is a story told beautifully. The narrator does an excellent job.

Face to face with missing boys.

Just a bored lil girl in a small town trying to find an adventure. The story is not clear on some details, has a small level of racism, big level of classic. Some details used through out the story did not come full circle in the end. The use of context clues just fell flat.

Will Keep You On Your Toes!

Disappointed with the abrupt ending. Story a little long winded in spots.
Enjoyed the narration by Caitin Kelly

Good bad aspects to story

This was a who done it to the end, and you think this young girl is living such a messed up life on top of trying to find out what sick person is kidnapping boys and molesting them. I wanted to see what happened to the family at the end so bad, I hope there is a sequel. Great story, makes you a little mad at the parents but adds to all the mystery too.

Suspenseful to the end.

I love a good crime book, you know the ones that keep you wanting more and when it’s over you think WOW (blown away). Unfortunately I didn’t feel that way towards this book. I felt like there was a few things unexplained about Cassie’s dad and all the mystery behind him and the “parties”.
Also the ending feeling like all this and this is what happened? Just my own personal opinion.

I wasn’t impressed
