Publisher's summary

A mission to a foreign land has left Captain Trip Yert with a responsibility he never anticipated: watching over two dozen magical stasis chambers containing half-dragon young, including eight that are half-human. As bewildering as he finds it, all of them are related to him.

He’s vowed to ensure they make it safely back to his homeland where the sorceress Sardelle can, he hopes, advise him on how to care for them. But while he, Rysha, and Major Kaika are investigating a friend’s death and trying to arrange passage home, someone steals one of the baby girls.

If Trip can’t deal with hostile mages, corrupt business moguls, and the surprising secrets of his mother’s past, he may lose the little sister he never had a chance to know.

Contrived story. Some spoilers in this review.

Wanted to say this before I leave the rest of the review: I've loved every book in this universe before this one. And I'll most likely still get the next one, but I can't give this book a good review. This whole book seems forced. First off, this is a protection mission which is the worst. The whole time when a baby is missing I can't help but think Trip is wasting time and not focusing on getting the job done. I didn't like the pointless death mystery or that Trip valued that over his career and his kin. Competency plummets in the main characters. Trip is a pilot that has brutally killed people with machine guns for 2 years but for some reason now he's scared to kill people. He totally stops using his powers in the most obvious ways. He took on gold dragons in the earlier books but now he's helpless against magical animals. Rysha was okay but she also got de-fanged about half the way through. Major Kaika is the only one who acted like herself for the most part if not for a bit of forced callousness. Also, the kryptonite element, as another reviewer called it, has been overused in this story. Even Jaxy who brags about incinerating people in the old books, says at one point a brutal death was excessive. I really don't understand what happened to this installation of the series. Also, for those of you triggered by molestation scenes, you should know there is one in this book. Once again, I've loved every book in this universe until this one and if the next one is back to the quality I've enjoyed on the previous books, I'll throw it 5 stars like I've given all the previous books.

Extremely Long winded.

I absolutely love this authors series. I’ve read book after book unable to put the series down, accept for this book. Something changed with the author as she can spend an entire chapter on a single irrelevant scene. And most of the book is long winded and continues to repeat itself. It’s almost like she’s trying to win w writing competition to see how many ways she can describe every little thing that happens.

Dragon Blood everywhere!

Another brilliant adventure. I love Trip and all the other characters. This time, they're in hostile territory, trying to protect statis chambers. As always, Ms. Buroker develops a fast-paced, fun-filled adventure that make you never want to put the book down. I hope we continue to get adventures in the world of Dragon Blood.

One of the best series I ever read!

Lindsay Buroker writes fantastic series, but her "Dragon Blood" and "Heritage of Power" series that follows it are exceptional and stories I return to again and again! I recommend it highly!

I liked this book much better. Trip is finally finding some confidence and luckily, it is just in the nick of time. After the events of the last book, He, Rysha and Kaika have some precious cargo that needs to be protected as they try to find a way back to Iskandia. Unfortunately, it seems as if everyone on the island either wants him dead, wants the women soldiers with him dead, or wants to steal their "magic" swords. A warm welcoming city this is not.

We get to find out some more pertinent - both about Trip and about the Emperor who was kidnapped and exiled. But, there were a few times when I just wanted to knock Trip up side his head. I swear, can't you guys think a moment before you go running off? Falling into traps, being captured, and losing protectee's seem to be the norm in this installment. Fortunately, he has to soulbound swords with him that seem to help get him out of a couple of tough spots.

The information about his father keeps getting worse and worse, but Trip is determined to do the right thing by his charges and has decided he will NOT save them, just to give them away to someone or someone(s) who want them only for their power and it seems as if the Great and Powerful (insert sarcasm here) sword just might agree to bind with him.

Things just might be looking up. Or not.......

Following Dragon Blood Series

If you have listened to the complete Dragon Blood series, these books pick up and extend the story. I had read the first series a few years ago and didn't know this series involves a lot of the original characters. Caitlin does an amazing job as a narrator. On Audible, the narrator is the person who can make the listening enjoyable. I'm now off to the last book in this series. As usual, I am sad to come to the end of another series.

Different from Dragon Blood series

I haven’t enjoyed the Heritage of Power series as much as the Dragon Blood series. This book and the last have taken a serious turn. There’s an uncomfortable level of suspense. The previous series was more playful and lighthearted. (Also, the cover arts bugs me. Rysha is described as 6 feet tall. The cover art makes Trip look a head taller)

Not good

I wasn't expecting much but some of the scenes are really forced and unnecessary. Author is trying to squeeze more books out of the series which I understand but quite spoiling the general impression

I think this book was rushed!

Well the first third of the book is normal but after that the weirdness starts the MC is essentially superman now, so the team naturally discover kriptonite they know what it does how it can be used! So far so normal.

Im not kidding about superman can fly he can turn invisible he can read minds he can make force fields but he can do almost none of this if his girl friend with her kriptonite sword is with him!

So covert ops mission does he go alone and achieve everything easy or does he take her along to make things really difficult and potentially get one or both of them killed! Yes the dumb starts here!

Then the MC after that fiasco doesn't think life is dumb enough so Superman walks into a building made out of kriptonite and gets taken prisoner. Naturaly the baddy who has taken him prisoner is a James Bond villain turns up to monologue a bit then leave Superman alone with one inept guard. Can you guess if he escapes from one goon! This whole sequence seems like a cliche pile just to pad the story which is why I think this book was rushed.

After this section things get back to normal but dam that was hard to get though where established characters do dumb things. The later parts where they are fooled by tricks and magic are fine and a quite big battle get things somewhat back on track.

The dragons are still very goofy and funny but dam that middle third where intelligence is not a part of the writing is very very hard going.

Not great

How old is Trip again? It seems to me like Trip loses few points off his IQ in every book. After four books he should be more alert to dangers instead he walks into traps and needs rescuing even thou he has magic AND 2 swords.

Even better that the previous series

Honestly, these are some of my favourite books!
The old characters (Sardelle, Ridge, Duck, Angulus) are still in them and still have the same voices and personalities etc.
But the new characters in this series are amazing! Vibrant, relatable.
The story is surprising and riviting.
This book in particular answers a few questions.
I'm enchanted and addicted.
