The remarkable true story of Dudley "Mush" Morton, the most admired—and feared—submarine commander of World War II

Mush Morton was a warrior without peer. At the helm of the USS Wahoo he completely changed the way the submarines fought in the Pacific War. He would relentlessly attack the Japanese at every opportunity, burning through his supply of torpedoes in record time on every patrol. Over the course of only nine months and five patrols, Morton racked up an astounding list of achievements, including being the first American skipper to wipe out an entire enemy convoy single-handedly.

Here, for the first time, is the life and legend of a heroic submarine commander who fought the war on his own terms, and changed the course of the undersea war in the Pacific.

Great book, full of action and great account of the submarine war carried out against Japan!

How the men worked for one cause!

Excellent listen. I basically binged my way through. The content and reading kept the tale going- even through the few slow spots toward the end. This is not a new title. But, it dispenses with the military pomp and hoopla. It gets to the story from page one.

Wahoo, Mush Morton and your crew, You are on Permanent Patrol in the once again troubled waters near Japan. I can only hope your memory and memorials remind us how frail humans are in the face of terrible technologies, able to kill more efficiently and faster. Your Gato boat was such a technology in your day that we might learn from today.

All ahead full !

Great Personal Info About Key Personnel- Not Overly “Techie” About The Gato Boats, Like Wahoo

In the early years of WWII US Submarines were hobbled by both flawed torpedos and overly conservative doctrine. Mush Morton rewrote the doctrine from conservative stalking to the aggressive tactics of hungry Pirates, not seeking treasure but rather preventing Japanese troops and materials transiting to and from the Homeland. His leadership style put far more responsibility on the shoulders of lower ranked crewmen, focusing on the big picture.

All of this in the form of an action packed account into the heart of the Japanese empire.

Highly recommended for its value as an historical account, study of leadership and of human performance in the most violent crucible of War.

Outstanding Story of One Of WWII Great Heroes

What was missing from this documentary were the details of Wahoo's final hours. Other authors have indicated she was chased for many hours by Jap sub hunters while damaged. The location of Wahoo on 31 October 2006 in the La Pérouse (Soya) Strait indicated she had been hit by an aerial bomb after hours of being hounded by Jap anti-sub forces in the Soya Straight. Wahoo's wreckage lies today intact in about 213 ft (65 m) of water. God bless those on eternal patrol.

Overall a great story...missing some final details

Most shocking of our early WWII experience was the high failure rate of our torpedos; closely followed by and entangled with extraordinarily inept engagement tactics. That really seemed to fly in the face of FDR’s orders for unrestricted warfare. The arm of the naval service with the largest potential for realizing immediate results due to FDR’s order was the silent service. Yet they were the most hamstrung by duds among their officer corps and their weapons. It took bold, daring and forceful younger officers to shape a new mindset.
