Master the System. Survive a vast and unfamiliar ocean.

Henry is a freshly graduated marine biologist about to make the discovery of a lifetime when he's struck by lightning.

Thankfully, that isn't the end for him.

He wakes up alive and healthy. And he has... tentacles.

...What?

Follow Henry, a small Trickster Octopus trying to survive in a vast and unfamiliar ocean. He must navigate dangerous and mysterious waters, contend with magic-enhanced marine life, and find civilization—all while armed only with his wits, the ability to temporarily copy skills, and the tools of a bored and forgotten System.

Subnautica meets Chrysalis and other monster reincarnation classics in this light-hearted and often hilarious isekai LitRPG Adventure set in the great blue sea.

I'm always a sucker when it comes to a MC that's been Reborn into som'min that's not human. Whether it be an Ant 🐜, a Dragon, or even a lowly Blue Slime. I could name others but you get the picture, Right? In this tale our MC is a very small Octopus, struggling to get a bite, a meal that isn't gonna turn the table and eat him instead. And thus begins Henry's monster life. And with an AI that gave him an incouraging word a pat on the back and an admonishment to not die, before cutting him loose and then swimming away!?! 😆! So Henry worked on a plan to do just that, and leveling to get stronger. It wasn't until he met the Whale Pod to realize that there were other sentient beings sharing the ocean he lived in. He made a friend, Maurice a chimeric crab and together they went off on a grand adventure to grind, level and look for more friends. And maybe just maybe we'll find out if Ash is friend or foe.
So yeah grab some sushi, get the book or better yet audiobook to enjoy Henry and Maurice's great adventure!

Such AwesomeSauce! I loved Undersea Reincarnation too pieces...

The quirky odd creature reincarnation trope is quickly becoming one of my favorites. This characters are humorous and entertaining. The story was overall fun. The narration did a good job.

Lots of fun

Short Version: A delightful and often hilarious monster reincarnation story that takes the "reborn as a creature" trope and dunks it underwater. Henry the octopus is charming, the ocean setting feels fresh, and Todd Menesses does goodnarration work. If you enjoy LitRPG with clever protagonists and quirky companions, you'll have a blast with this one!

Longer Version:
Story: Henry was a marine biologist that wakes up as a tiny Trickster Octopus in a vast, magical ocean after an incident with a turtle. Unlike many isekai protagonists who get overpowered abilities right away, Henry starts out genuinely vulnerable - almost everything in the ocean wants to eat him, and his only real advantage is his human intelligence and the ability to temporarily copy skills from other creatures (once he figures out how).

What makes this work so well is the balance of intelligence, straining for survival, and just enough humor. The author clearly knows their ocean life, and watching Henry geek out over encountering magical versions of creatures he studied is genuinely entertaining. When he meets Maurice, a chimeric crab who becomes his companion, the banter between them elevates the story even more.

The progression feels earned rather than handed to Henry. He has to be clever, use his environment, and think his way through problems rather than just overpowering everything. The LitRPG elements are present but not overwhelming - you get enough stats and skill information to understand what's happening without drowning in spreadsheets. The underwater setting is refreshingly different from the usual dungeon or forest environments, and the author does a great job making the ocean feel both beautiful and genuinely dangerous.

The side story from the POV of a different character and location (not spoiling who or where!) sets up nicely for future plotlines and gives some wider perspective on the world in which Henry finds himself.

Narrator: Todd Menesses does pretty good, although not fantastic, work here. He captures Henry's mix of scientific enthusiasm and existential panic perfectly, and he gives reasonably distinct voices to the various sea creatures. The pacing is spot-on throughout, and he handles both the comedic moments and the tenser action sequences really well.

Pros:

Fresh underwater setting that feels unique in the LitRPG space
MC has to use his brain rather than just being overpowered
Great companion characters and entertaining dialogue
Solid narration by Todd Menesses
Light enough on stats to keep the story flowing
Creative take on the skill-copying mechanic

Cons:

Some listeners might find the early chapters where Henry can't communicate frustrating
Ends at a point that makes you want the next book immediately
If you need human characters and dialogue as the main POV, this might not scratch that itch

Overall: This is one of those books where the author took a well-worn trope and made it feel fresh again. The underwater setting, the marine biology knowledge, and the humor all combine to create something that stands out in the increasingly crowded monster reincarnation subgenre.

Recommended for: Fans of monster reincarnation stories like Chrysalis and readers who appreciate protagonists who have to outsmart rather than just overpower their problems.

Not recommended for: Readers who need human protagonists and lots of human interaction, those who get frustrated by protagonists starting weak and vulnerable, or anyone who needs complete story arcs in every book.

This one's worth the credit, and I'll definitely be watching for book two!

Fun Start & A Different Take

I only read it because it’s a monster MC litrpg. I don’t like MC side characters, and I don’t care about them. Also I find the MC to be boring and dull personality wise. I personally don’t like the book because of this but Im going to say it’s fine anyway.

PS: The main character’s personality is the main issue for me. I don’t like how he still wants to be a human and live with other humans, it’s not interesting at all. Also there is zero mental growth happening, simply because the MC doesn’t seem to need it. Truly a boring and dull MC. This is the reason why most reincarnation fantasy’s are trash, zero mental development needed.

It’s fine.

at first I was kinda on the fence at the beginning as it takes a few chapters where it is the MC unable to communicate with others. it was good enough that I decided to stick with it and I'm glad I did and quickly this things picked up. lots of giant kraken and other sea beast being hunted. several funny moments and now I can't wait for the next book to drop.

so much fun under the sea
