Publisher's Summary

In a world of suppressed magic, I’m an Unknown. Deadly power, little control. I’m only alive because I pay a blood sorcerer to keep me hidden. But when he comes to collect on the debt I can’t pay, one of his goons slams me with a deadly curse. Suddenly, I’m out of options and out of time.

When I’m given a rare chance to join the secretive Undercover Protectorate and train at their academy to become an investigator, I have a way to hunt the cure for the curse. They have resources I don’t. Easy, since I’m broke.

Seems like a good plan, right? At least, until they tell me Cade will be joining me on my hunt for the Blood Sorcerer. He's an actual Celtic war god - and the hottest guy I’ve ever seen. The catch? I can’t let him know that I’m an Unknown, or I’m out on my ass and deader than Hades.

Great Read.

Since Bree and Ana were small, their mother told them they have to hide their powers because they are Unknowns. Now they rely on a Sorcerer to create a talisman to keep them hidden, but when they can't pay said Sorcerer, he sends goons to collect. The goons hit the girls with a deadly curse before they are saved by some strangers. Bree and Ana have a limited amount of time to get the antidote before they die, but thankfully the strangers that saved them are from the elite Undercover Protectorate and the girls are invited to join them. Can they get the antidote in time though?

This is my first book by this author and I have to say that I loved it!! I know these characters have been in another of the authors series, but this is fine to read if you haven't read any of them as I followed along fine!!

Right from the start, you are drawn into the world and action. The two main characters are Bree and Ana, though Bree is featured more prominently. The whole story is action packed and intense, it's filed with adventure and even has a God!! The whole plot was seriously amazing. The authors writing just brought the world alive.

The best thing for me was the characters. I loved both Bree and Ana. Both were incredibly well written and developed and I loved seeing them grow. All the characters from the Protectorate were intriguing and I can't wait to get to know them more. I also loved Cade. I'm dying to know more about the God of War!!

In all, this was such a great read. I really had a hard time putting this down and I need book 2 now!!!

Laurel Schroeder was fantastic. She put emotion behind her characters and they really came alive. She is definitely a narrator I need to listen to more.

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Outstanding Paranormal Romance

I absolutely love this author and have enjoyed every single book she writes. This book is a spin off of another series but you could read it as a stand alone. I was familiar with several of the characters and have enjoyed all her previous books.

Narration is always top notch with this author/narrator and this one was excellent like always.

I love this young adult Paranormal Romance with lots of action, adventure, and a touch of romance. The characters are well developed and the world building is always well done. The story flows in a great pace!

I’m looking forward to her next book! You cannot go wrong with Linsey Hall! Her books are always a lot of fun to listen to!

The Narrator ruins it.

This is the first time i've liked a story but felt the narration was ruining my experience. The cadence of the narration in this book is awful. She reads four or five words at a time no matter where in the sentence structure she happens to be and makes every phrase a captain Kirk like question whether it is or not. The tone of her voice is fine but she cant seem to string a whole thought or sentence together at once, there are always these disjointed short phrase's ... horrible . I tried speeding it up or slowing it down but it just makes it worse even more sing song and totally annoying. Usually after a couple of chapters I can ignore a narrators quirks and just submerge into the story....no luck so far.

Awesome new spin-off/continuation series

This book is a stand-alone book, the first in a new spinoff series or continuation of a new to me series, being “The Dragon’s Gift” series by this author. From what I can tell, there are 5 books in the original series then, several continuation series: “Dragon’s Gift: The Seeker”, “The Protector” and “The Valkyrie”. After listening to this book, I went to look for more from this author/ narrator team and found I already had the very first book of the original series in my library, I just hadn’t listened to it! What a wonderful surprise because I absolutely loved this book. I am now going back and starting from the very beginning to tide me over until the next Valkyrie book comes out on audible. Linsey Hall has created an amazing fantasy world full of wonder, magic, action, adventure and many unique characters. Laurel Schroeder does an excellent job giving each of those characters a unique voice. Schroeder gives an outstanding performance that brings these characters to life. I received a review copy at my request and voluntarily reviewed. I have since bought and am listening to the first 5 books of the original series.....loving it! Definitely credit worthy!

Narrator's nasally inflection is frustrating....

I have this series on my Kindle but decided to revisit it through the audio version. The narrator barely makes an effort to give appropriate intonation for how the characters are feeling or reacting. It sounds monotonous in many parts. The other parts are frustrating to listen to since she has this lengthy, breathy, nasally type of inflection at the end of a phrase before she takes a breath to read more. I don't know what to call the noise she does; but it's just annoying. The noise sounds more appropriate for "intimate" scenes between characters & not when they are in a supernatural battle. Hoping the noise changes soon or I won't continue.

Good story, terrible narrative

I couldn't even concentrate on the actual book due to the completely awful voice of the narrator. Each beginning of sentence sounded exactly the same, superweird connotation on some words, weird emphasis on the words in any one sentence. But the worse the two to three last words in every sentence the words are drawn out dipping in tone. Very distracting. I cannot believe this person is allowed to destroy Lindsey's books, I was extremely disappointed and frustrated. Glad I could return I'mmediately. Sorry...

Change of scenery for Bree and Anna

This is a wonderful new book by Linsey Hall with Bree in the spotlight. There is a big change of scenery for the two sisters as they leave Death Valley behind to work with some awesome (and really hot) supernaturals.
Laurel Schroeder's performance is as usually superb, as she tackles different accents and characters as noone else.

a great listen for all fantasy loveres out there.

Narration needs work in my opinion

I don't like giving bad reviews but the narration needs work. In my opinion she speaks like William Shatner as Captain Kirk in Star Trek. She pauses and exhales at the end of most sentence.
The story seems entertaining with all of the adventurous scenes and weird magic. There book isn't a romance. There is the inklings of a relationship between the oldest sister Bree and one of the leaders Kade, but not much happens until the end.

Great Story!

This story is a standalone, spin-off of The Dragon’s Gift Series. The story is well written, fast-paced and entertaining. The narration was really well done and easy to listen. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Unbelievably Awful

The author needs to come up with a new idea instgead of trotting out exactly the same scenario as in the previous three series. It's increadibly formulaic and wasn't so good the first time around (nor in any of the books that so many mnay many other authors have the same formuila in)

- I must keep my True Nature and Huge Power secret.

- I'm forced bu circumstance to take part in a life-threateningly dangerous mission with a big, arrogant hugely, massively, unbelievably, fantasticallly, wonderfully, powerdul man (honestly the point is really that belaboured in the book) - Oh and, by the way, he's an actual god.

- He's so good looking I can barely think about anything else but how hot he is.

- I mustn't be attracted to him, or get close to anyone.

- **{Hearts, flowers, and twittery birds}** Through adversity we find we're destined for each other.

**{GACK!!!!}**

Perhaps this sort of predictable repetitiveness is your idea of a good read/listen - in which case, ave at it and enjoy, but I can't really say I'd recommend it to anyone.

And, a point particular to the audiobook version - They're all living in Scotland, yet not a single character can pronounce Edinburgh, despite their local pub being there....

Good book but was ruined by narrator

The narrator was lackluster and sounded depressive. I felt like she was putting the intonation on the wrong words and stopping at the wrong time to take a breath. I believed she could do better but she is unexperienced.

Like the Story

I liked the story but unfortunately I didn't enjoy listing to the book. The narrator's pauses and end to sentences were distractingly breathy and often her emphasis on words and tone seemed all wrong to me. This is the first time I haven't seen a book series to the end.

Slow start but..

For me this book was a bit of a slow burner to the point I was considering whether to persist as I kind of didn’t like it. However I suggest you persist as I did, once I got into the book I found I really started to enjoy it. I guess I was not keen because it really doesn’t offer any background to the characters instead jumping right into the scene not giving me time to relate. For this reason I think it’s probably better to read the prequel book of this series (not one I have read yet but did see mentioned in a review I read)

As far as the narrator goes, she was great, really adding to the story. Other than the slow burn and lack of background, I really just wish these audiobooks were at least twice as long. $15 for just 6 hours of listening is a bit pricey and putting me off buying the next instalment despite really enjoying the first book. I think I will wait till I can buy it discounted combined with the kindle version.
