Publisher's summary

A "heartbreaking, heartwarming" (Heidi McLaughlin, New York Times best-selling author) love story that asks the question: What do you do when your soul mate marries your best friend? If you're Kate Evans, you keep your friend Rachel, bond with her kids, and bury your feelings for her husband. The fact that Shane's in the military and away for long periods helps - but when tragedy strikes, everything changes. After Rachel, pregnant with her fourth child, dies in a car accident and the baby miraculously survives, Kate upends her entire life to share parenting duties. Then on the first anniversary of Rachel's death, Kate and Shane take comfort in each other in a night that they both soon regret. Shane's been angry for a year, and now he feels guilty too - for sleeping with his wife's best friend and liking it...liking her. Kate's ability to read him like a book may have once sent Shane running, but their lives are forever entwined and they are growing closer. Now with Shane deployed for seven months, Kate is on her own and struggling with being a single parent. Shane is loving and supportive from thousands of miles away, but his homecoming brings a betrayal Kate never saw coming. So Kate's only choice is to fight for the future she deserves - with or without Shane...

Fantastic narration!!!

This book will definitely put your emotions through the ringer!
There is a lot of angst in this book and maybe I'm a sucker but I truly loved this story! I know there is some controversy in other reviews and it's because of that that I had to read it myself and I'm so glad I did.
Kate is one hell of a strong woman. Some might say she's a doormat but when you deeply love someone despite their flaws, your emotions get the better of you. Her soul mate ended up marrying her best, so Katie pushed her feelings aside and was there for Rachel every step of the way. It was easy because Shane was in the marines and constantly being deployed, however, tragedy strikes and Kate puts her life aside to be there for the kids and Shane. She's an amazing person and loves those kids like they're her own. A year after Rachel's death, Kate is called upon to check on Shane and when she finds him and alcohol is involved; the lines get blurred - big time!!
Their story is a roller coaster of emotions. Shane is a dickhead a lot and I do not agree with the way he treats Kate. My belief is that he was a scared boy afraid of his emotions and the way he felt for Kate when they were younger which made him resort to go with a safer choice. Now years later, he's an angry man and is stilled scared of his emotions but after being with Kate, his walls slowly come down. After he makes a colossal mistake shattering everything, he finally sees the light and will do everything he can to fix it..... but will it be too late?!!

This was a brutal listen

This story is all about kids. The mmc has 4 kids, plus he was a foster himself. And the mfc was the bio kid of parents that also chose to foster. Kids are the connective tissue between all the adults in this book. So if you think kids are cockblocks, like I do, this isn’t your book. If you feel icky when adults have no friends, but overshare with their mothers and siblings, this isn’t your book. If you think women are more than wombs and helping hands, this isn’t your book. If you like a mfc with some dignity, this isn’t your book.

Pride is one of the 7 deadly sins but I was PRAYING for this woman, Kate, TO PLEASE GET SOME. She was absolutely pathetic.

The mmc, Shane, was a prick. I hated everything about him right down to his crappy career choice. He was a passive monster. A pragmatic villain. A true ‘neutral evil’. He did daily damage to the mfc because he was emotionally stunted and selfish. He was only kind when he was horny or with his kids. A lifetime with him would be full of passive aggression, hard labour, and silence.

Of course there's a HEA. But these two had a very bad romance. Lots of drama, no love. If it weren't for the 8000 kids they would've been better off living on opposite sides of the country. smdh. Anyway, this story begs a few serious questions: how much selfishness and cruelty is too much between a man and a woman? If a woman is used, and compromised, and she sacrifices for years, is ending up with her repentant abuser REALLY enough of a prize? And if a woman is complicit in her own slavery does she deserve any sympathy?

Can’t get enough

Everytime I’m in a book slump, this is my go-to re-listen and re-read. How I wish we could get another book with Kate and Shane.

Listened to the Audio.....

Audio - 7/20/19

I revisited one my favorite reads via Audio. It did not disappoint! Alastair Haynesbridge and Charlotte North did a fabulous job bringing these characters to life..... although bad on Audible for neglecting to mention Ms North as the second narrator.

1st read - 7/3/16

5+ Stars!!! - I almost did not read this book because of some of the negative reviews written about the H/MC and I am so glad I gave it a try. It did not disappoint!

This was a heartbreaking, full of angst and gut wrenching story. The author did a fantastic job making you feel the emotions the characters were experiencing instead of just reading about it. Have your tissue box ready!

Shane, oh Shane, - He made it so easy to hate him. I ugly cried with the mean things he said and did to Kate. It was downright cruel at times. That hotel episode really hurt!

Kate – A genuinely nice and caring person. Some described her as a doormat because she let Shane verbally abuse her, repeatedly. But I wouldn’t go that far. She was in love with him and also loved those children as her own. She saw the good in Shane and what he did not see or want to see in himself.

Rachel – She took advantage of Kate’s generosity and good nature. She was not honest with Shane about how involved Kate was in raising the children when he was deployed. I also did not feel that Rachel and Shane shared this great love. She was safe for him because they shared the same screwed up childhood.

Towards the end, Kate had enough of Shane’s verbal abuse and made him suffer a little before their well-deserved HEA.

This book is my favorite kind of love story. Full of angst, heartbreak, sexual tension and an ass*ole H/MC who doesn’t know what he has until he almost looses it.

Give it a try!

Sooo good!

This story was so good and original. Storyline was so different than the usual, but it was a perfect love story with a strong woman! Loved it!

Not a feel good story

This was not a feel good love story. The H was truly a total jerk and the h was definitely a doormat. She may stood up for herself but her words and actions did not match. Hence, a total doormat. So sad that the h took so much verbal abuse from him. He did again and again. Even after sex, he constantly telling her how much he regret doing that. Like I said, this story was not a feel good story and it will not lift your spirit. Good secondary characters but awful MCs.

Best Character Growth

I thought I would hate this hero, but I didn’t. I hated his choices, but he grew. I thought I’d think the heroine would be weak, but was she strong and resilient. This book so good.

Deserving 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Nicole Jacqueline you did your thing with this story. You picked the right narrators. This story tells us that you don’t have to give birth to be a mother. Beautiful story and wonderfully written. I can’t wait for number 2 in this series. Love audiobooks ♥️

Fantastic!

I always read reviews before I jump in because I don't like cheating, love triangles, and find reverse harems hard. I almost didn't read this because of a detailed review that stated the MFC was a doormat through to the end.

That couldn't have been further from the truth. Kate was strong and she always spoke up. The situation was tough from the beginning because Shane was gone on deployment and didn't have all of the information. There were kids involved and just some history that needed to be sorted. Kate was so honest with her feelings and the refreshing thing is Shane knew about them, he just wasn't ready. Yes, he was a total dick to Kate quite a few heartbreaking times but make no mistakes their love was beautiful and so was the way this story was told.

No cheating of any kind, no RH's, and no love triangles.

This is definitely a book I will listen to again and again.
