Typical ya but a fun distraction

The beginning was hard to get through. Too much angsty troubled teen. Definitely a lot of cliches. That being said, i did enjoy the story. It is a fun light read.

My review of Two Princess of Summer by Nissa Leder

If you are a fan of Fae, go ahead and pick this one up. It will not wow you like the world that Sarah J. Maas has painted for us but it will help you get through your Rhysand hangover. This is book 1 in a 6 book series so there is still time for Nissa to do a bit more in depth character building. Plus the series is free for Kindle Unlimited and the first one even has audible whispersync so yay! Free audiobook.

It's a tale as old as Kane and Abel. Sibling rivalry at its finest. In the Fae realm there are multiple courts. Winter, Autumn, Spring and Summer. On the human lands there are 2 courts that do not abide by the same laws as the Faere realms... the Seelie and Unseelie courts. This is pretty standard in all Fae Folklore. As is that most high fae possess unique powers.

In this novel, 2 half brothers must battle each other for their ailing fathers throne. 1 gains power by feeding off the emotions of humans. Sadness and grief seem to be the biggest power rush for him. That's where Scarlett (Our main character) comes in. She is grieving after losing her mother to suicide. Her grief and sadness gives the Prince an advantage over his brother. It also gives Scarlett the opportunity to forget her sorrows for when he drains her pain away, she forgets to be sad.

Prince #2 draws his power from nature but can't help being drawn to Scarlett. He tells himself that he does it to get back at his brother but I'm sure we all know where this is going.

Fear not though! There is a twist that will have you running for book 2. The high King of the Unseelie Court makes an appearance and shows Scarlett things about herself that she was already starting to question and will be a total game changer.

I loved this book. It was predictable but not in an obvious way. I love losing myself into the world of the Fae and this book also gave me total Red Queen (Mare Barrow) vibes as well.

A Faire Tale for this generation...

This story is a typical fairytale for this genre with the author's own slight twists on what's popular right now. You're either going to love or hate this book. So go into this knowing that this story follows the classic template for fairy tales, specifically Fae and Vampire tales of this generation. There is a beautiful girl (who somehow feels like an outcast) and then gets seduced by a beautiful fae male. It has a love triangle vibe. There is the typical bad-boy-dark-fae who is secretly not actually bad. There's an evil step-mother and a female warrior who has to prove she is just as good as the guys. If you go into this story knowing this stuff, I think there is a good chance you will ignore the cliches and similarities to other books and just enjoy it for the story it tells.

So here's how I got here:

I was desperately searching for a good Fae book for my vacation drive when I found this one deep in my audiobook recommendations. I've never heard of the author but anytime I see an independent author who takes the chance of doing an audio book in my type of fantasy I try to give them a chance. Plus the cover is pretty 😊. Yes I still get pulled in by a good cover.

Truly, I liked the book. I'm not saying it is the greatest or its 100% original... but Nero told us that there is nothing new under the sun... or maybe Nero was fiddling while Rome burned... either way some ancient dude said it a long time ago and it's still true. There is nothing that we haven't seen in some shape or form in any book we read. That being said, I think this book deserves a chance on your bookshelf. If you're tired of regular Cinderella or Bella from Twilight then here is something similar but different enough.

Now, I have to also be honest and let you know it has some shaky moments.

1. It seems as though the main character took care of herself in High School while her older sister was in college. She never mentions a job or how they pay the morgage/bills after their mom died.

2. Grandma is mentioned once but doesn't come to take care of her grandkids while they are living at home alone school... ???

3. The fae magic system is off a bit. I wont give you details because I dont want to spoil that part of the plot.

4. I hated the shape shofter angle... it seemed a far stretch.

5. It was a short audio book for me, but I ended up listening to book 1 and 2 back to back.

I rated this book based on the feeling I had after reading it. It was the type of listen I needed while I drove 3 hours on the backroads to Myrtyle Beach.... Not too depressing, not too annoying, fantasy, fast paced, and didnt involve annoying teenagers.

3 Stars 🌟🌟🌟- Good Book. I like the overall concept and it was delivered well. Most common ranking for a book I enjoyed and look forward to the next.

A good story of the fae and two brothers

I really enjoyed that the POV was from all three the Princes and the mortal girl. I have already purchased the next two in the series.

I needed it to help me sleep. it worked

basically I'm a stressed out college student that can't sleep.
so I thought to myself why don't I get a cliche YA fantasy book and see if that'll do the trick. this thing is better than white noise. better than melatonin. better than chamomile tea. technically I've listened to it three times, but I haven't heard past the first chapter. so approximately 16 minutes to fall asleep as opposed to the typical 2.5hrs. I call that a win. I can't say much for the plot or the characters. but by golly it's awesome. I wish I'd have thought of this sooner.

Entertaining

Good story. I liked the pace. I liked the world building , the questions and the characters.

It was an interesting novel

It was a fairly good book although it can be hard to determine certain characters voices and which point of view you are in. Although the story was very creative and very entertaining to listen to.

Reads like a teenager fanfic

Ok, it’s not the worst book I’ve ever read, but it’s pretty bad. High levels of cliche and so predictable. The author just kind of drops things into the story with poor context and it basically feels like reading something written by a teenager. A very smart teenager, but still. There is one spicy part, but it’s otherwise pretty clean, for the most part. No foreshadowing or anything clever about the plot. The narration wasn’t the worst, but it was odd at times and some sentences felt clipped short. All in all, I do not recommend and I will not read the rest of the series.

disappointed

The author loves to tell the story instead of show it. Dull narration, though the voices are good. Unsatisfying ending, poor character motivation and not well written.
