About this listen

From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh comes the first thrilling novella in the Rogue Justice series.

When Detective Seth Harding responds to shots being fired, he faces a familiar sight: a double homicide. However, he is shocked to find a young boy chained in the basement. The terrified child refuses to speak, but Seth knows he is the key to something sinister.

Reluctantly, Seth calls the only social worker he trusts with the traumatized boy - his wife. Carly is recovering from her own trauma suffered on the job, but she can't turn away from this case, not from another child in trouble. With torrential rain bearing down, threatening to isolate their little town in a killer flood, Seth and Carly know the best way to keep the boy safe from danger is to take him back to their farm.

But danger is as relentless as the storm. And it's following them all the way home.

This novella keeps you guessing from the start. Lots of drama and a wee but of romance. Recommend this series.

Good read

This story was an average crime-mystery novel. But the narration was so stilted I really struggled to listen all of the way to the end. I can't emphasize the poor quality of this narration enough. I won't listen to anymore books by this author.

Awful Narration Ruined Story

Although I knew this was a Novella, I was so disappointed when it finished. Good story, kept you awake. Narration really good. Now time for a full story.

The narrator was wonderful. I honestly had to keep coming back to it. Once I gave it a chance I was somewhat entertained.

Started off slow...

I know when I pick up a Melinda Leigh title I'm in for a great story with engaging and genuine characters. Such is the case here as Seth, a local detective, and Carly, his social worker wife, find themselves in harm's way. I'm normally not a big fan of novellas because it's difficult to get richly built histories and personalities of characters in such short stories. But Melinda Leigh always manages to make that happen.

I'm definitely onboard for the rest of the series based on this first book. I loved the relationship between Seth and Carly- how they've struggled to rebuild their relationship after almost giving up on it. How they've had to rewire their thinking in order to make things work. It adds a great dimension to this read while reminding us that life is messy and never goes according to plan.

Always a Good Choice

The story itself is not bad, but the reader was very mechanical. At times it sounded almost like a robotic reading. The result being it was very difficult to enjoy this book.

Hard to enjoy
