Publisher's Summary

Meet Amy Winter: Detective Inspector, daughter of a serial killer.

DI Amy Winter is hoping to follow in the footsteps of her highly respected police officer father. But when a letter arrives from the prison cell of Lillian Grimes, one half of a notorious husband-and-wife serial-killer team, it contains a revelation that will tear her life apart.

Responsible for a string of heinous killings decades ago, Lillian is pure evil. A psychopathic murderer. And Amy’s biological mother. Now, she is ready to reveal the location of three of her victims - but only if Amy plays along with her twisted game.

While her fellow detectives frantically search for a young girl taken from her mother’s doorstep, Amy must confront her own dark past. Haunted by blurred memories of a sister who sacrificed herself to save her, Amy faces a race against time to uncover the missing bodies.

But what if, from behind bars, Grimes has been pulling the strings even tighter than Amy thought? And can she overcome her demons to prevent another murder?

Ugh... Narrator

I can't stand breathy, whispery voices and she nearly ruins the story with hers. Speeding it up to 1.25 helped. The story was good and while I was suspicious of some characters all the way through, the final outcome surprised me. I like that.

Happy when it was over...

I should have returned this book, but I felt I’d let it go on too long to return it in good consciousness.
I enjoy a good mystery, but not one so trite and fraught with implausibilities.
And, the narrator’s whispery breathy reading was irritating at best.
Sorry, but this one wasn’t for me.

Riveting Story

Suspenseful new police procedural series led by an intelligent DI who has quite an intriguing past.

While DI Amy Winter is morning the death of her beloved father, she is stunned when she receives a letter call from Lillian Grimes, a woman serving life in prison for the murdering the teenage girls that she and her husband kidnapped, raped, and murdered. Lillian makes Amy an offer she can't refuse: She will reveal to Amy where the girls are buried if Amy complies with all of her requests. She also provides Amy with some interesting information about her childhood. Amy gives into Lillian’s demands, but she might be playing right into this psychopath's hands.

Amy now must now battle childhood demons, a manipulative psychopath, and as well as an elusive kidnapper.

There are multiple storylines and several different narrators including, Amy, Poppy, Paddy, Hemmy, and Lilian. It’s a little confusing at first, but everything comes together. Amy has the largest role. Her colleague Paddy also has a major storyline.

The ending wraps up a little too neatly (or so it seems until we get to the final page). I am not sure how I feel Elaine’s revelation but more about that can hopefully be answered in the next book. There are some very sick and twisted scenes that involve rape, physical violence, and domestic abuse.

This is a well-plotted, character-driven first installment in the DI Amy Winter series. Amy’s character is a force to be reckoned with. The reader gets to know her very well, but I wanted to know more about the years between her childhood and the present moment. Paddy was also quite likable. The ending along with the revelation of Amy’s background set things up to make the next installment very interesting.

I really don't have time for another series, but I couldn't resist reading this after seeing so many glowing reviews from my Goodreads friends. I recommend to those who enjoy police procedurals.

Elizabeth Knowelden was amazing with the delivery of the storey

Great story...awful twist

This book was so great! Up until the last 15 minutes. No spoilers, but the twist at the end was so unnecessary, not to mention unbelievable. But apart from that it was a great read.

A Very Dark Tale With Some Redemption

What a dark and gripping mystery. Wow! It was so good I couldn’t quit reading/listening but made me anxious. I was so worried about what that horrible mother would do. Amy Winter is a detective following in her father’s footsteps, her adopted father. She shows strength and the ability to go the extra mile to find the answers. In this story she is led along by her mother, birth mother, Lillian Grimes, found guilty of murder. Lillian is manipulating Amy by promising to tell her where the last three bodies are buried if Amy will visit her in prison. The whole story is riveting and you don’t really figure it out until the end when all is revealed. Along with the cold case of the Grimes killings, there is a real and very recent kidnapping of a young teenager in a very reminiscent fashion. Along the way, past meets present and some of the details along the way just add to the complexity of Amy’s life. As Amy regains memories of what happened when she was 4 years old, she comes to know the truth and is able at last to let go of some of the guilt she feels about her sister, Sallyanne. This is a wonderful book. The author is terrific. The narrator, Elizabeth Knowledon, is wonderful. She does the voices in such a subdued and soft fashion that you are spellbound. It takes place in London and no guns are involved. It is dark, almost gothic, but it all about the murders.

Puttytat

Great Book! No spoilers. Excellent narrator. She should win an award someday. Great story BUT!!!! If you are going to have what all listeners are finally hoping for, an intelligent female driven main character with guts! Don’t have that intelligence COME & GO!! Please !! It is something women writers do with their female characters. The main character has the right thoughts and actions and at the height of things, here it comes .. Wait for it... THE STUPIDS!!! The character starts having dumb second thoughts men would never have. Makes me crazy.
It is worth listening to. Just be prepared for the inevitable. I wasn’t because the writer seemed impervious to this malady but she did it.

Brilliant

I came upon this book as a free offering (Kindle & Audible-narrated versions) for Amazon Prime members. I’m a fan of crime fiction/psychological thrillers, & I have to say, this was right up my street.

An amazing & quite different storyline. Well written & well narrated. Lots of plot twists, but still easy to follow in narrated form.

I noticed that the author has written a series of books based on DI Amy Winter, the main character in this book. This one is the first in the series, & now that I’ve finished it, & especially now that I know the ending, I’d absolutely advise reading/listening to the first one first.

In the past, I’ve often randomly come across books in a series, but read them out of order & it often doesn’t matter. But I’m so glad I randomly came across Book 1 in this series first.

I can’t wait for Book 2!

Disappointed

The storyline started out interesting but slowly went downhill with a very anticlimactic ending. The narrator sounded as if she was whispering the entire story.

Surprisingly good!!!!

This book creeps up on you - the description seems simple enough but the book is written well and 'layered'. It was a pleasant surprise. Good narration!

Dreadful Narration.

I gave up trying to tolerate the dire narration, after one chapter. Just awful, I'm afraid.
The story may have been brilliant, but I will never know.

Too unrealistic and awful narration

The story felt rushed and I didn't feel a connection to any of the characters as they didn't seem properly developed. There were too many attempts at attention grabbing turns that fell flat. The narrator didn't feel suitable for the story either, so I would absolutely not recommend this one.

Annoying and unbelievable

So much about this book annoyed me! The absurd obsession with the cat. The stark divide between stereotypical sinners and saints (even though a few characters were more complex, most were just stereotypes). The ridiculous twists at the end. And of course the classic "detective goes into dangerous situation alone and inexplicably decides not to call for backup". This will be my first and last book by this author.

Caroline Mitchell

I have had this Audible Book for approximately over a year and to begin with thought I would not enjoy it. How wrong I was! It is not the run of the mill police procedure book. Instead it impressively combined family ties that, I must stress were somewhat gruesome, for the faint hearted, however the writer combined this with such heartfelt rewarding outcomes. I was drawn in and hooked completely! The most exciting opportunity was awaiting me. To find out that after finishing the book on a cliff hanging ending a sequel had already been released. I am about to start it today, further more not only is there a follow up to this amazing book but two more. One called Flesh and Blood which has only just been released! The twists and turns were original and plotting from the author were incredible. I read and listen to many different types of thrillers ranging from psychological, domestic and police / detective genres. This hits all of these subjects with skill and perfection. My last but by no means forgotten comment is that of the narration! I don't think any other narrator could have brought this book to life! I have listened to other books read by Elizabeth knowelden, and thoroughly enjoyed them, I do believe she has excelled and adapted herself for this Audio Book and alongside Caroline Mitchell created a listen not to be missed!

A stonking good read!

I hope this series continues in the same engrossing style as Truth & Lies. Definitely not just another plodding police procedural. The narration was exceptionally good, subtly dramatic and expressive but never OTT. A gripping story only slightly let down by being a tad too long with an overly sentimental ending.

Almost a good story. But the narrator made it difficult to listen to. As others have said her breathy style has ruined this audio book. The story was a little silly but interesting. I won’t be getting the others in the series because of the narrator.

Totally unbelievable...

The initial idea seems wholly derived from the Fred & Rosemary West case. However the story became more and more implausible and convoluted as it went on. The motives and actions of many of the characters were hard to believe and the ending seemed very contrived.

Struggled with this one

Sorry main character felt rather weak and a bit pathetic struggled to finish the book.
