Acerca de esta escucha
Taking the position of mayor in the town of Tilling brings much delight to Lucia. However, with her local rival Miss Mapp around, trouble is never far away. Lucia is elevated to her new position with Georgie Pilson as her sidekick, confidant, and escort. Lucia and Georgie renew their acquaintance with the opera diva Olga Braceley and the composer Cortese, but nobody in Tilling believes Lucia when she claims to have entertained a duchess.

Historia
Nothing escapes the snooping opera glasses of Miss Elizabeth Mapp. She whiles away her busy hours observing the small English village of Tilling, and recording the antics in her notebook. But her observations are set to be disrupted by amorous advances of two retired army generals, both vying for her affection. With Miss Mapp distracted, who will keep Miss Susan Poppit in her place or oversee the correct playing of bridge? More importantly will quiet Tilling be subject to a violent duel?

Barbara Jefford is the hilariously outrageous Lucia in this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of the novel by E.F. Benson. Lucia is the uncrowned queen of 1920s provincial society, the Everest of social climbers and the most delicious of snobs. In the pastoral serenity of the village of Riseholme, Lucia and her unforgettable cronies face up to an Indian guru, spiritualism, and a cultural usurper.

Barbara Pym is one of the 20th-century's wittiest, and most underrated, novelists. Her perceptive comedies of manners, centred around the domestic lives and loves of unassuming middle-class Englishwomen, won her many devoted readers and saw her hailed as a modern-day Jane Austen. Yet she spent 15 years out of print in the 1960s and '70s, until Philip Larkin championed her work in the Times Literary Supplement. Her seventh novel was subsequently shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and writers from Jilly Cooper to Alexander McCall Smith continue to laud her talent today.

The scene of this entertaining story is laid in a charming English village. The plot centres round Miss Barbara Buncle, a maiden lady who was obliged to write a book because – as she naively explained – her dividends were so poor. Unfortunately, Miss Buncle had no imagination, so she wrote about her friends – quite kindly and truthfully, of course, for she was a benevolent and veracious soul.

As Heathcliff's bitterness and vengeance is visited upon the next generation, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past.

The Diary of Nobody (1892) created a cultural icon, an English archetype. Anxious, accident-prone, occasionally waspish, Charles Pooter has come to epitomize English suburban life. His diary chronicles encounters with difficult tradesmen, the delights of home improvements, small parties, minor embarrassments, and problems with his troublesome son. The suburban world he inhabits is hilariously and painfully familiar in its small-mindedness and its essential decency.

On a beautiful spring day, Julia Harburn sat on a seat in Kensington Gardens enjoying the sunshine. She was wearing a white frock and a large straw hat with a sapphire-blue ribbon which exactly matched her eyes - a strange coincidence, as it turned out, for the blue sapphire was to have a far-reaching influence upon her life. So far, her life had been somewhat dull and circumscribed; but quite suddenly her horizons were enlarged. She began to make new friends.

Lady Wetherby had a big, soft heart, and she hated hurting her fellows. As a rule, when she had bad news to impart to any one, she administered the blow so gradually and with such mystery as to the actual facts that the victim, having passed through the various stages of imagined horrors, was genuinely relieved, when she actually came to the point, to find that all that had happened was that he had lost all his money.

Classic British Humor
For fans of P. G. Wodehouse. But why only the abridged version of this “Lucia” classic? All six volumes should be available unabridged. They are brilliantly funny as written and do not deserve to be cut. I feel ripped off settling for an abridged version. I paid a whole credit, and I want the whole book. I would have scored all fives if this was a complete book.

Inexplicable abridgment
Ok, let’s be honest. Any true Luciaphil lives for those moments in the Lucia novels when the hackles rise and the claws come out. In Trouble for Lucia, this climactic moment occurs when Lucia insults each of her friends in front of all the others for not believing that Duchess Poppy came to visit her. And guess what? The abridgment of this book inexplicably removes almost all of that scene. It’s so “tarsome,” as Georgie would say, and ruins an otherwise excellent audiobook. It’s still worth the listen, but be warned if you are waiting for that scene, as I was.

Not a bad abridged version, but where's the unabridged?
It's fine, but nowhere near the unabridged readings available for Miss Mapp and Queen Lucia. Oh, well. It gave me a dose of Tilling and that's better than nothing. We need a complete set of Mapp and Lucia unabridged, preferably read by Nadia May!

Unsatisfying not to hear the whole thing
I admire Miriam Margolyes. She knows what's funny, and she lands the laughs, but she never seems like she's trying too hard and she never makes the production be all about her.
The book, of course, is a treasure, with wonderful episodes (Major Benjy's riding whip, Quaint Irene's satirical painting, Duchess Poppy). I do find that the Blue Birdie plot makes Susan too sadly pathetic for what is otherwise a romp.
The abridging here is not as egregious as in the other Lucia titles; even so, why abridge them at all? Such delightful material hasn't worn out its welcome after 3 hours, 49 minutes. This edition was a nice one-time manifestation of the book, but I would not return to it and I would not recommend it for anyone who hasn't read the full version.
